BeforeCataclysm, the dragonflights were tasked with protecting Azeroth against everything that sought to do it harm. Each of the five flights have a specific role to ensure that Azeroth thrived, but they did not always follow the guidance of the Titans. These dragonflights are all unique from each other and players will have to recall what each doesonceDragonflightrolls around, which will likely add a whole new layer to their story.

The Red Dragonflight
One of themost important dragonflights on Azerothis the red dragonflight. These dragons were ordered by the titan Eonar to protect all life on the planet. They are all adorned with red dragon scales and have the ability to breathe fire that can either destroy life or bring it. The leader of the red dragonflight is named Alexstrasza, and she leads them on their mission to protect the sacred life of the planet. Members of the flight tend to end their names with strasz if they are male or strasza if they are female.
The red dragonflight spends their time maintaining the harmony of life and making sure that Azeroth thrives. They are opposed to causing harm to others unless it is absolutely necessary, and their fire can bring life back to the dead. They are generally the only dragonflight that the mortals of Azeroth encounter and have agents spread all across Azeroth. They assisted in fighting back against the Scourge inWrath of the Lich King, and Alextrasza was responsible forsaving the life of Bolvar Fordragon. The flight also led the battle against Deathwing’s flight inCataclysm.

The Green Dragonflight
The green dragonflight was ordered by the same titan Eonar to protect the natural world of Azeroth andthe magical realm of the Emerald Dream. These dragons have green scales and have a strong connection to the animals of Azeroth. They have ties to the druids of Azeroth and will occasionally seek them out to assist the flight. They were once ruled by the great dragon Ysera, but she lost her life to corruption from Xavius and found rest in the realm of Ardenweald. Members of this flight will tend to end their names with us if they ae male or ra if they are female.
The green dragonflight spends much of their time in the Emerald Dream where they watch over nature. They work closely alongside the druids of Azeroth as they help the flow of nature and evolution. While they are very approachable, they often do not care about what happens in the mortal world as they consider it a simple illusion. Much of the flight spend their time studying dreams and are hard to track down in the wild. Their main struggle is combating against the corruption that is known as the Emerald Nightmare, and they have seldom participated in mortal conflicts. Most recently, Ysera’s daughter Merithra took charge and helped defend Azerothagainst N’Zoth’s corruption duringBattle for Azeroth.

The Bronze Dragonflight
Unlike the red and green dragonflights, the bronze flight are gifted the ability to time travel by the titan Aman’Thul and spend their days watching the flow of time. They spend much of their time in the Caverns of Time in Tanaris. They are led by Nozdormu and appear to be very stoic. Due to their time traveling, the flight is very disconnected from current events, as they are experiencing a multitude of different time periods at a time. They seldom interact with mortals unless the one true timeline is being threatened. They do, however, managethe timewalking feature ofWorld of Warcraft. Their names tend to end in dormu for males or dormi for females.
The bronze dragonflight send their agents across the time stream disguised as mortals in an attempt to maintain the true timeline. Players seldom encounter members of this flight except for small quest chains or the timewalking feature. Perhaps one of themost recognizable agents of the flight is Chromie, who players have encounteredinWorld of Warcraft,Hearthstone, andHeroes of the Storm. SinceCataclysm, the bronze dragons have lost their ability to control time, but they can still traverse it and fix it. There has been an increasing number of bronze dragons that believe they should change history and make a better future for Azeroth.

The Blue Dragonflight
The blue draognlfight are the protectors of arcane magic, and they ensure no one abuses it. They were given this task by the titan Norgannon, but were brought to near extinction by Deathwingduring the War of the Ancients. Their leader, Malygos, protected the last remaining eggs and was able to rebuild, but he fell into a deep depression. Two young dragons, Kalecgos and Tyrgosa, assisted Malygos in breaking free from his sadness only for him to be struck down during the Nexus War. After Deathwing was defeated, Kalecgos declared that the flight would be disbanded and the blue dragons were free to do what they wanted. Ex-members of the flight tend to have their names end in gos for males or gosa for females.
The blue dragons spend much of their time learning about the secrets of magic. Members will spend their time acquiring magic, researching more about it, and cataloging it. They will often take positions of power so that they can monitor and police the use of magic by mortals. More recently, they have begun being more social with mortals due torising threats inWorld of Warcraft, but they can also come off as very hostile to some arcane spellcasters.

The Black Dragonflight
The black dragonflight has acquired much disdain from the other flights and the mortals over the years. These dragons were tasked with protecting the earth by the titans and were once ruled by Neltharion. However, the Old Gods chose Neltharion as their champion and were able to corrupt much of the dragonflight, with Neltharion being rebranded as Deathwing. The black dragonflighbt would become a reoccurringthreat to the mortals across Azerothas they rained down magma. They were once the protectors of Azeroth and helped raise the very land that mortals walked on, but the corruption got the better of them, and they became one of Azeroth’s greatest threats. Their names once ended in ion for males or ia for females.
InWorld of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Deathwing once again caused destruction across Azeroth, which forced the other dragonflights to act. Once he was defeated, much of the black dragonflight was destroyed. Wrathion, a black dragon free from corruption, saw to it that every other black dragon be killed - including his own father. In recent times, the dragonflight seems to be recovering, and Wrathion has vowed to fulfill the duty that the titans gave them. Time will tell if that is indeed the case or if something far more sinister is at play.
The five major dragonflights of Azeroth were tasked with protecting various aspects of life across the planet. While they did not all succeeded, and some caused more harm than good, they were once major players across Azeroth and have not had a massive story sinceCataclysm. Now,World of Warcraft: Dragonflightpromises to bring the dragons back to the forefront of the story, and fans cannot wait to see what Blizzard has planned.
