Warhammerboasts a sprawling universe that spans tabletop and video games alike. Although franchise creatorGames Workshop currently wants more AAAWarhammergames,it appears that an independent Canadian studio will be developing the latestWarhammergame. During the first day of Gamescom, Gasket Games unveiled a first look atWarhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground.

According to the Gamescom teaser,Storm Groundwill arrive in 2021 for the Nintendo Switch, PC, the PS4, and the Xbox One. While the reveal did not show off any gameplay, fans seemed excited for a strategy-based adaptation ofWarhammer’s richAge of Sigmarsetting. Gamescom Opening Night Live host Geoff Keighley introducedWarhammerAge of Sigmar: Storm Ground, calling it “a brand new universe” for gaming. As for the trailer itself, a narrator introduced powerful forces of evil rolling across the world, opposed by the iconic Stormcast Eternals.

Although the narrator never explicitly names the game’s antagonists, one can assume that the trailer’s mention of the “dead"refers to the Nighthaunt, undead soldiers commanded by the god Nagash. This voiceover is accompanied by majestic cutscenes showing the golden soldiers ride stardrakes into battle.

Although the original trailer didn’t reveal many details about gameplay,  the YouTube trailer’s description and information the game’s Steam page revealed more hints aboutthe nextWarhammertitle.According to publisher Focus Home Interactive’s summary of the game,Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Groundis “a skirmish turn-based strategy game,” and looking at the two gameplay screenshots on Steam have fans believing thatStorm Groundwill be a MOBA.Several fans ofWarhammer’s real-time strategy games will likely be disappointed by this news.

However,Storm Ground’s potential choice of genre would make sense. After all,Frontier Developments is already making an RTS take onWarhammer: Age of Sigmarfor 2023. Ultimately, although this decision might not sit well with fans, Games Workshop might not want another RTS title to step on the other developers' toes, especially if Gasket Games continues to support the game for a long time after launch. Although time will tell whetherWarhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Groundwill be a success, it is exciting to seeAge of Sigmarreturn to its strategy-based roots. Hopefully,Storm Groundwill also manage to live up to excited players' expectations.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Groundis slated for 2021 for PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One.
