There are some comparisons that could be made between a Space Marine ofWarhammer 40kand Doom Guy from theDOOMfranchise. Both are helmeted super soldiers with enhanced strength and a love for killing demons in the goriest ways possible. With these comparisons, and the fact thatWarhammer 40kfeatures a wealth ofdaemons created by the various Chaos gods, it seems almost a perfect setting for aDOOM-like title. Now, fans may have it, asWarhammer 40k: Boltgunis revealed alongside a new trailer.
Boltgun’strailer begins showing what appears to be someone moving house. The camera zooms in on a box titled “Jamie’s Stuff” from 1999. Opening the box, the nostalgic music swells as the unknown character opens up a box of oldSpace Marineand Chaos Space Marine miniatures fromWarhammer 40ktabletop. After setting out their old models, the character then picks up a floppy disk, just to really let that 90s nostalgia sink in. The disk has “Boltgun"written on it, along with “confidential,” implying that this is an unreleased title from the 90s that fans are just now seeing.

This is likely a thematic choice from developer Auroch Digital, as the company has decided to giveBoltguna traditional graphical style similar to that of the originalDOOM. There are pixelated models and textures, with a modern twist that appears to give the gameplay a much quicker feel more akin to the newerDOOMtitles. The gameplay shown in the trailer is short and sweet, and sees the Space Marine protagonist taking on the villains ofWarhammer 40kin the form of multiple Chaos daemons and Chaos Space Marines.
It’s not exactly stated where this game is set, but it will likely have the player roaming through different levels set in theWarhammer 40kuniverse, perhaps even visiting the Realms of Chaos themselves to take the fight to the daemons home world.Boltgunwill likely offer a similar amount of mindless killing to some otherWarhammergames that let players take on the role of the super soldier Space Marines, such asWarhammer 40k: Space Marine.
Plenty of other franchises have hadDOOMcrossovers before, but these are mostly done through modding, like whenDOOMwas given aHalomakeover. However, the release ofWarhammer 40k: Boltgunseems to promise more than just givingDOOMa reskin, and will give nostalgic gamers and fans of the franchise an experience of suiting up and sending some daemons straight back to the Warp.
Warhammer 40k: Boltgunwill release in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
