Summary
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesco-creator Kevin Eastman recently explained where the idea for a game based onThe Last Ronincame from. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Roninwas a breakout success, spawning follow-up comics andan upcoming video game adaptationthat was announced earlier this year. Not much is known about this game so far, except that it will draw inspiration from Sony Santa Monica’s recentGod of Wargames and will likely be a much darker and more brutal experience than recentTMNTgames likeShredder’s Revenge.

A video game adaptation ofThe Last Roninwas something very fewTMNTfans saw coming ahead of its announcement, and franchise co-creator Kevin Eastman recently sat down with Comicbook.com to explain how it came to be. He says that while many had hoped foraLast RoninTV show or film, it was Nickelodeon that suggested a video game instead. “They collectively came up with the idea of a video game because we could go all the way there,” Eastman stated, hinting at a faithful adaptation of the comics. “They’ve taken all the different drawings and moments… the stuff we’ve seen so far is goosebump city […] It’s really phenomenal.”
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have along and storied history with video games, but most of these titles drew heavily from the zany, colorful antics of the classic 1987 cartoon that helped launch the franchise into a pop-culture sensation. It can be argued that the closest the Turtles have gotten to their gritter comic roots in gaming was their appearance in NetherRealm’sInjustice 2- and even that depiction was still much brighter than the bleak world ofThe Last Ronin.
For this very reason, the idea of a game based on theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Roninminiseries is an exciting one for many - especially if said game is taking inspiration fromthe equally grittyGod of Warsequels. The top brass at Nickelodeon seems to have agreed with this sentiment, as it was their idea to green light the newLast Roningame as per Kevin Eastman. It will probably be a long time before fans see this adaptation of the somberLast Roninstoryline in action, but Eastman’s claims of it faithfully capturing moments from the now-beloved comic seem promising.
