The last console generation was not so kind to theXboxbrand. After Phil Spencer took over for Don Mattrick as Head ofXbox, many changes had to be instilled not just in the company but throughout all of Xbox, from name recognition to gamer’s attitudes towards the console. Xbox has come a long way since the tumultuous launch of the Xbox One in 2013, and now Spencer himself has confirmed in an interview that the Xbox Series X/S consoles are the fastest-selling Xbox consoles of all time; that means even beating out the coveted Xbox 360.
Speaking to the The New York Times as part of a huge interview on the Xbox brand, Phil Spencer dished out on where the Xbox Series X/S sit at this time compared to their predecessors, and it turns out Xbox is doing the best it ever has. Spencer says that the Xbox supply is the biggest it has ever been but that the company is struggling to keep up with demand. This of course is partly due to chip shortages that haveput a wrench in all the major console-makers plans (such as Sony and Nintendo)in the past 2 years. However, Spencer then claims that the Xbox Series X/S models are the fastest-selling Xbox consoles of all time.

It would seem that the dual-console approach is working wonders for the Xbox brand, giving consumers multiple ways to experience Xbox titles at different price alternatives. Over on Twitter, industry analyst Daniel Ahmad pointed out that he has estimated that the Xbox Series X/S have shipped over 12 million units as of this writing. He says that the increasedproduction of the “S” model has allowed Xbox to have more units on store shelves, rather than just having the “X” model.
Spencer continued by saying that the company is still selling physical discs despite the massive push towards streaming via the cloud andsubscription services like the Xbox Game Pass. He says that Xbox Game Pass is relatively new and still popular which is why it has been growing at such an alarming rate. Spencer doesn’t think it’ll totally take over physical and digital sales of game titles, but it certainly does seem to be inching its way towards that outcome.
The Xbox brand needed to come out the gates strongfor this current console generation and having done that, the Xbox Series X/S can lay claim to being the fastest-selling Xbox consoles and for reinvigorating a brand that was in need of a push to continue to stay competitive in the console space. It will be interesting to see where Phil Spencer takes the Xbox team and consoles from here and throughout this current generation.
