While on the road, John earned a reputation as one of the best hunters by never leaving a monster he encountered alive. Racking up an impressive kill count, John was also one of the most knowledgeable hunters, as he kept a well-documented journal detailing the strengths and weaknesses of many of the creatures he had faced. For the majority of Sam and Dean’s childhood, John was always on the road living a separate life. There are many things that are unknown about John Winchester, and only the most die-hardSupernaturalfans know his deepest darkest secrets. Here are some things about John Winchester that only die-hardSupernaturalfans know about.
6John Was Supposed To Break The First Seal
InSupernaturalseason two, episode one, John Winchester and his sons barely survive an encounter with the yellow-eyed demon, Azazel. While Sam and John make it out in one piece, Dean is fatally injured. Fearing the worst, John makes a rash decision and sells his soul to Azazel to save Dean’s life.
This act cements that John Winchester was sent to Hell for making a deal with a crossroads demon. Later in the show’s fourth season, Alastair admits that he tortured John Winchester while he was in Hell in an attempt to make him break. Alastair goes on to say that he never faltered, so he was pleasantly surprised that his son was weaker than he was.

5John’s Father Was A Man Of Letters
John Winchester became one of the best hunters in the world after diving head first into the life due to the grief caused by the death of his wife, Mary Winchester. While Mary’s family had a long history of hunting, Johns’s family had a quite different tie to the occult.

John’s father, Henry, was a man of letters. The Men of Letters was a secret international organization that dealt with cryptid creatures and demonic events of the world. The Men of Letters even chained Abaddon, a Knight of Hell, and had established bases scattered across the western world. John was to become a man of letters. Unfortunately, his father perished before he could be ordained.
4John Is The First Soul To Escape Hell
After John’s death at the hands of the yellow-eyed demon, Sam andDean Winchestercontinued on their mission to hunt the demon down and put a bullet in its head. The brothers were led down a rabbit hole of revelation where they discovered that Azazel sought to open a devil’s gate and unleash Hell on earth.
While dealing with Azazel’s distracted the Winchesters, Jake Talley, one of Azazel’s best soldiers, was able to open the gate. As a fight ensued, Dean was overwhelmed by Azazel but was saved when his father’s spirit escaped from Hell and stepped out of the gate. John bound the demon long enough for Dean to fire off a shot from The Colt, killing Azazel.

3John Has Been Michael’s Vessel
The Winchester brothers were destined to be the divine vessels of the Devil,Lucifer, and the Archangel, Michael. The lineage of the Winchester can be directly linked back to Cain and Able, proving that no matter how they protested, they would always end up involved in the apocalypse.

However, there have been other vessels for both Lucifer and Michael, one of which is John Winchester. In the “Song Stays the Same” episode of Supernatural, the Angel Anna goes back in time to kill Mary Winchester to stop Sam from being born. This prompts an appearance by Michael himself, who punishes Anna for interfering with his destiny. Michael possesses the body of John after getting his consent and Kills Anna mercilessly.
2John Winchester Served In Vietnam
One of the most mildly explored pieces of John Winchester’s history is his military career. Throughout the show’s fifteen seasons, it is only spoken about briefly. John Was a decorated marine in the Vietnam War, receiving numerous medals such as the Vietnam Service Medal, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.

John also received the Expert Rifle badge for weapon use with his MI16 service weapon. John’s military record is often related to his treatment of his sons, being called more of a drill sergeant than a father. Hopefully, John’s military service will be explored further in thespin-off series,The Winchesters.
John Winchester was never celebrated as the father of the year. On more than one occasion, he was described as a cold and stern man, even though his sons loved him very much. On more than one occasion, John’s negative personality traits would put him at odds with his sons, especially Sam, who ran away from home at a young age.

However, there was only one instance where Sam and Dean’s image of their father grew dimmer. Season four, episode nineteen of Supernatural reveals that the Winchester brothers have a half-brother they never knew existed. It’s further revealed that John attempted to start over and do right by his child and new bride instead of mending his relationship with his oldest sons.
