Jon Favreau, director and creator of the beloved Disney PlusStar WarsseriesThe Mandalorian, has thrown his hat into the ring of a particularly heated debate topic among the fandom. He’s got his own view on who was the stronger Force user in their prime between Luke and Anakin Skywalker.
With all theawesome things Luke Skywalker has donein and out of theStar Warsmovies, it might seem like a simple question. But things aren’t quite so cut and dry. Ask any 5Star Warsfans who would win in a fight between the father and son, and they’ll give 5 different answers, which is odd considering there are only 2 possible outcomes. Favreau seems to place himself on one side in particular, and he’s got some good reasons.

In a recent interview withThe Cyber Nerds, Favreau responded to this seasoned question amid discussions aboutThe Mandalorian. “I think it has to be Anakin, right?” he replied when asked who would win between Anakin and Luke in their respective primes. “I mean it has to be. I mean who– a prime Anakin? And there’s so many different phases of it. But… we never really got to see– we saw a little bit of prime Luke with what we did. We alluded to it, but who knows what he’s been off to? But Anakin faced so many more challenges… He was in his prime in a more dynamic period inStar Warshistory, right?”
It does make sense. Luke may be a more relatable character, as he’s inspired different takes on a similar formula. Some even say thatCassian Andor is the Luke Skywalker of the modern age. But when it comes to pure power and skill with the Force? It’s hard to deny that Anakin showed a mastery that Luke struggled with, even at his highest point. As Favreau said, the period helps since Anakin was forced to be more practical with his skills due to being a Jedi just before the fall of the entire Jedi Order.
Of course, there’s also the issue of whether this refers toAnakin as a Jedi or as Darth Vader. It sounds like Favreau is specifically talking about Anakin before his fall to the Dark Side. But in that case, he could also be implying that he became weaker after that since Luke defeated him in his own prime. Hard to say, especially based on the incredible feats Vader pulled off over the years.
Or maybe this is like measuring the depth of a puddle with a yardstick. This isStar Wars, after all. One day, it details the rise of a fascist government, while the next seesheroes winning the day with the power of friendship. As silly as the argument might seem, it’s awesome to see Favreau thinking about such things with serious interest. The Mandalorianis undoubtedly in good hands.
