Dagor Dagorath, also known as The Last Battle, is (fittingly)the last canonical battle said to have taken place in Tolkien’s world, which was popularized byThe Lord Of The Rings. The event itself can be compared to any massive apocalyptic event across a variety of cultures, but it is most often compared to events like Armageddon or Ragnarok. What this means is that, unlike the fate of the world at the hands of Sauron, the very fate of existence was in the balance. If the forces of good were to win the battle, a new world would be born filled with the kind of prosperity that mortal men couldn’t even dream of. If the forces of evil were to win, everything would have come to a dark end with the Dark Lord Morgoth standing as the ultimate being.

This mysterious event is far more difficult to find information on when compared to many others purely because it seems to have not been intended to be included as a major part of the universe’s works. There are hints at the event throughoutThe Silmarillion, though it is only ever named The Last Battle. One suchmention fromThe Silmarillionis as follows:

“But Ar-Pharazôn the King and the mortal warriors that had set foot upon the land of Aman were buried under falling hills: there it is said that they lie imprisoned in the Caves of the Forgotten, until the Last Battle and the Day of Doom.”

Lovers of Tolkien’s works had to piece together hints across his works to even come to the conclusion that the entirety of the series would end with Morgoth’s return and a massive battle known as Dagor Dagorath being kicked off to determine the fate of everything.

Considering the fact that Dagor Dagorath was the potential end of all things, it shouldn’t be a surprise that just about everyone and everything in existence took part in some form. It truly was a battle between all the forces of evil and all of the forces of good withinThe Lord Of The Rings. The all-out battle required all of the Free People of the world to band together to hope to withstand the might ofthe returning Morgoth, who proved himself more than powerful enough to plunge everything into utter darkness.

Morgoth can be assumed to have brought forth all of the vile creatures he would have allied with during his first attempt to defy Eru Iluvatar and destroy everything that had been created. This would mean that instead of simply marching with a massive army of Orcs and Trolls like Sauron had, Morgoth would have so much more. Specifically, it is likely that the first Dark Lord would have headed into battle with fierce Dragons and mighty Balrogs by his side.

When it comes to the forces of good, fans ofThe Lord Of The Ringswill already be intimately familiar with the various races that would have stood against Morgoth. While it could be assumed thatthe mighty Dwarveswould be happy to help out, the Men and the holy beings ofThe Lord Of The Ringsuniverse make a much bigger impact than any of the other races. Some of the most notable named figures are Turin, Manwe, Eonwe, and Tulkas, though Turin might be the most important of them all thanks to his contribution to the completion of the battle. It can also be assumed that both sides threw everything they had at each other in this climactic battle.

How Does Dagor Dagorath End?

While Morgoth was prophesized to return, it wasthe returning Turin Turambarwho was destined to end the struggle of good and evil. It seems that, at some point toward the close of the battle, Tulkas and Morgoth end up battling, but even the might of the powerful Ainur wasn’t enough to defeat Morgoth. Launching himself into the fray alongside the other holy beings, it would be Turin Turambar with his blade in hand that would stand against and ultimately cut down Morgoth. The powerful spirit of Turin needed to avenge the strife Morgoth had inflicted upon him, so he would somehow manage to defeat the Dark Lord despite there not being a clear indication of how that fight went.

With Morgoth defeated, the conditions for what is more or less the total reset of the world can begin. The Silmarils could then be gathered and, eventually,the Two Trees and the Light of the Valinorcould be restored (the two trees that resulted in the existence of the sun and moon). After that, the world that fans ofThe Lord Of The Ringsknow and love will be destroyed forever essentially becoming remade as an entirely new one. As the Elves awaken in the new world, the process of building can begin anew, though it is stated that the world will be much more prosperous and free of terror in this iteration. It seems that the cooperation of the al the races and the destruction of darkness will ring in an era of prosperity that is yet unseen inThe Lord Of The Ringsuniverse.
