Summary

Michael Connelly is responsible for creating theBoschuniverse with his successful book series, and in 2014,Amazon Primeadapted it into a television series, airing the first season ofBosch, and it has grown ever since, with seven seasons of the original show before a spin-off series was created calledBosch: Legacy, based on Harry Bosch’s life as a private investigator after he left the LAPD. Each season ofBoschandBosch: Legacyhas been based on the source material, with a mixture of two books usually used for each season.

With many more books in the series yet to be adapted, theBoschuniverse could go on for a long time yet. To add to this, two spin-off seriesare currently in the works, with shows based on Harry Bosch’s partner in the original series, Jerry Edgar, and an adaptation of Michael Connelly’s book series about Renee Ballard, which exists in theBoschuniverse, with the detective teaming up with Harry Bosch on occasion in joint adventures.

It was confirmed earlier this year that Amazon would be developing a Jerry Edgar spin-off show, with Jamie Hector officially signed on to reprise his role. Not much is known about the upcoming series yet, other than it will see Detective Edgar being tapped up for an undercover FBI mission in Little Haiti, Miami.

Detective Renee Ballard hasn’t yet featured in the Bosch television universe, but Amazon has confirmed she will get her own spin-off series in the not-too-distant future. No casting details have been confirmed yet, and plot details are also sketchy at the moment. But it’s expected that the Renee Ballard series will be based on the books she appeared in. The first season will consist of 10 episodes.Variety reportedon the announcement of the spin off series, revealing the official description for the show.

follows Detective Renée Ballard, who is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold case division—a poorly funded, all-volunteer unit with the largest case load in the city. Ballard approaches these frozen-in-time cases with empathy and determination. When she uncovers a larger conspiracy during her investigations, she’ll lean on the assistance of her retired ally, Harry Bosch, to navigate the dangers that threaten both her unit and her life.

Will there be crossovers with Bosch: Legacy?

As the character of Renee Ballard also appears in theBoschbook series, as well as joint adventures, it is likely she will appear in the next season ofBosch: Legacy, to introduce her character in a backdoor pilot of sorts. Even if she doesn’t appear, she is bound to feature in crossover episodes at some point to link the shows together. And in turn, Titus Welliver is bound to turn up in her show too.

As for Jerry Edgar, he has already appeared inBosch: Legacy,so it’s likely he will make more appearances in that show, along with some future crossover episodes. Despite Edgar’s spin-off show being set in Little Haiti, Miami, it is more than likely he’ll return to Los Angeles to team up with Harry Bosch at some point.

How could the Bosch universe expand moving forward?

If the Jerry Edgar and Renee Ballard spin-offs perform well, which they likely will do based on the success ofBoschandBosch: Legacy, it is expected Amazon will turn its attention to producing more spin-offs in theBoschuniverse. There are so many fan-favorite characters in this world to choose from who would make compelling central characters in their own shows.

Lance Reddick returned for a cameo in an episode ofBosch: Legacyseason 2, and his character, Irvin Irving would’ve been a good choice to feature in his own show. Unfortunately,Reddick passed awayearlier this year, putting an end to that possibility. Bosch’s former colleagues, Detectives Crate and Barrel have turned up in guest appearances in both seasons ofBosch: Legacyso far, and a spin-off show based on what they get up to in their retirement would make for an entertaining comedy-drama series.

Detectives Rondell Pierce and Christina Vega appeared in season 2 ofBosch: Legacyto assist Harry Bosch in the investigation into Lexi Parks' murder, and they could potentially team up for a new show as they take on brand-new cases.

Another option for the future of theBoschUniverse could feature another character who is linked to Harry Bosch in Michael Connelly’s book series. The Lincoln Lawyeris currently showing on Netflix, with a third season on the way in the near future. It sees the character of Mickey Haller running a law firm out of the back of his Lincoln town car in Los Angeles. In the book series, he is the half-brother of Harry Bosch, but any crossover withBosch: Legacyis currently unlikely due to Netflix holding the rights to it, andBosch: Legacybeing owned by Amazon. But if anything changes in the future, and Amazon were to obtain the rights, it would be great to see the half-brothers team up in a crossover story.

Bosch: Legacy

Bosch: Legacy picks up where the original Bosch series left off, with the titular detective leaving the LAPD and going into business as a private investigator. Titus Welliver reprises his role as Harry Bosch, along with Mimi Rogers and Madison Lintz. Both shows are based on the novels by author Michael Connelly.
