Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reveals why aGrand Theft Automovie hasn’t been made.GTAis one of the most popular game series around and hasmade billions of dollarsand so some fans have found it strange that a movie about its characters hasn’t been created.
Speaking toThe Wrap, Zelnick explains that if Take Two and Rockstar Games were to make aGTAmovie, “we’d want to have complete creative control to make sure we expressed it the way we wanted.” However, if they are to have control over the film, they’d also have to finance it. The way thatGTA 5has been selling means that Take Two and Rockstar have the money but “we don’t have the corporate expertise to do it.” Only a few people at Take Two have experience in the movie business.

Fans of theGTAseries may be disappointed hearing what Zelnick has to say.TheGTAseries has so many great charactersthat fans would enjoy seeing on screen. A film aboutGTA 5would offer more of Trevor’s wild behavior, more of Michael’s family issues, and more of Franklin and his dog. The popularity of other heist movies, such as theOcean’sseries andWidowsalso means that there are probably thousands of movie fans who would buy tickets, not knowing anything aboutGTA.
However, many can understand where Zelnick is coming from. Video game films don’t have the greatest reputation and to make sure that aGTAmovie doesn’t do badly, Take Two and Rockstar would have to help make it. TheSonic the Hedgehogmovie was criticized for its Sonic design and theSonic redesign was also criticized by the game’s creator. It’s not easy to make everyone happy with such a large series likeGTA.
There is a way to do it well and films such asDetective Pikachudid well at the box office.Detective Pikachuwas created by Legendary Entertainment and The Pokemon Company and many fans really enjoyed it. Take Two and Rockstar would have to try very hard to find a production company that would allow it to have control over the film and that won’t be easy. It seems like aGTAmovie is unlikely to happen in the next few years but if Rockstar can create a great story withGTA 6, fans may just forget that there isn’t a GTA movie.
