His career is long and illustrious, though he himself is considered “semi-retired.” Nowadays, the game designer has been posting about his time in the gaming industry, such asSakurai showing off rare gaming collectibles, or offering insight from his time in the industry. Sakurai is however still an active gamer, where he keeps up with a lot of modern releases. One of these titles he played was Insomniac Games’Spider-Man 2, and he gave the game a lot of high praise.

This compliment was posted on Twitter, where he commented on how he managed to finish bothSpider-Man 2andSuper Mario Bros. Wonderin roughly the same night. He notes it was pretty difficult sincebothSpider-Man 2andWonderreleased on the same day. Regardless, he states that both games are amazing, calling them both “masterpieces” as well. Sakurai also states that he can recommend both games to anyone, thanking the developers for making them possible.
I finishedSpider-Man 2andSuper Mario Bros. Wonderlast night. It’s a problem when the release dates of big titles you should watch overlap…! However, I think both are masterpieces that I can recommend to anyone. The new games are amazing, and I’m grateful to them for making them.

Both the Japanese and English-speaking sides of Sakurai’s followers were glad to hear how both games got the same amount of praise. Other fans were surprised to hear that he cleared both of the games roughly at the same time and within a short span of time, as well. Since both games were released on October 20, with Sakurai’s tweet mentioning he beat them being posted on October 23rd, he managed to beat both titles within 2–3 days. This is an impressive feat consideringhow long it takes to beatSpider-Man 2, with a story-only playthrough ranging between 10–15 hours alone.
Super Mario Bros. WonderandSpider-Man 2both received the same high praise from critics and fans, withSuper Mario Bros. Wonderstill holding a higher review rating over Insomniac’s gameas of this writing. BothSpider-Man 2andSuper Mario Bros. Wondercould be considered the best games of their franchises if a designer like Sakurai endorses them.
