Whether fans like it or not, two of the most powerful Jedi to ever exist inStar Warsare none other than Anakin Skywalker andhis son Luke Skywalker. Each was uniquely powerful in their own way due to their immense connection to the Force, which led to each of them having many impressive exploits. They lived and trained in strikingly different eras in the galaxy, which could have resulted in a massive power difference, but it seems that greatness and strength run within the Skywalker genes.
With all theStar Warslore that exists and the fact that certain things have been retconned or reset, it can be tricky to figure out who is the strongest in the galaxy at any given point. Luke Skywalker was able to defeat his father when the latter was under the name of Darth Vader, but some have wondered who would win between a prime Anakin Skywalker and a full-strength Luke.

Was Anakin A Good Jedi?
This is a fairly easy question to answer, considering Anakin was the chosen one. He was a fantastic Jedi during his time fighting for the good of the galaxy, in large part due tohis excellent master, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Another large factor is the high midi-chlorian count in his body, giving him one of the strongest connections to the Force among any Jedi alive. An entire novel could be published just going over his accomplishments during the Clone Wars, as Anakin was one of the most active participants of that conflict.
When it comes to combat, Anakin may have been hot-headed, but he was capable of holding his own against some of the most powerful villains ever to roam the galaxy. One of his biggest accomplishments was surviving an encounter with theimmensely skilled Count Dooku, a loss that he would later avenge by defeating and killing the Sith. Anakin’s aggressive style of fighting led him to success against opponents that most people would be too afraid to stand against.

Was Anakin Stronger As Darth Vader?
There is a debate that will probably never end, especially with canon resets, whether Anakin as a Jedi isstronger than Darth Vaderas a Sith. It’s not easy to determine, as Anakin is powerful and weak in different ways in each form. His immense speed and connection to the Force in his youth made him a dangerous opponent, but so did his immense power and skill with a lightsaber later in life as Darth Vader.
Those who love Darth Vadermay jump to say that this version of Anakin was stronger, but that would be overlooking his mostly robotic body. Because he is made of so many synthetic parts, Darth Vader’s connection to the Force was significantly weaker than Anakin’s. This means that while Darth Vader was able to dominate his foes with the Force, he could have been much more powerful had he never suffered his wounds on Mustafar. Darth Vader would have the experience, power, and dueling advantage over his younger self, but Anakin would have speed, connection to the Force, and a stronger drive to fight for those who are close to him.

All of this is to say that while Anakin may not be as physically strong as he would become as Darth Vader, a duel between the past and future iterations of Anakin would likely result in some kind of stalemate. Luckily for the galaxy, Anakin would find his power kept to a minimumwhen he became Darth Vader.
How Powerful Was Luke Skywalker?
It used to be easy to say that Luke Skywalker wasthe most powerful being in theStar Warsuniverse. Unfortunately, with how limited the canon of the universe is now, that is debatable. What is clear is that Luke was still an incredibly powerful and legendary Jedi Master in his own right. Though he had minimal training with the likes of Obi-Wan and Yoda, his connection to the Force was unparalleled thanks to his Skywalker heritage.
Luke was able to battle against the Empire, and eventually, defeat and turn his father Darth Vader to the light. Luke never received any serious lightsaber training, yet he was able to best the master duelist in Vader on his third attempt, meaning that wielding a lightsaber came naturally to the young Jedi. Luke’s connection to the Force has been on display time and time again, with arguably his most impressive feat beingthe ability to project his image across the starsto pretend to do battle against Kylo Ren. The strain of that would kill Luke, but it is theorized that the reason this feat took his life had to do with his weakened connection to the Force.

Could Anakin Have Beaten Luke Skywalker?
The realistic answer seems to be, yes,Anakin in his prime could have defeated Luke Skywalker(in the current canon) if they battled one-on-one. The main reason behind this is Luke’s lack of formal Jedi training, at least when it comes to combat. Anakin was one of the most skilled Jedi with a lightsaber long before he fell back on pure dueling ability. His training with his master and his ability to beat Obi-Wan in sparring shows that Anakin was not only strong and fast, but also cunning enough to get past one of the greatest defense fighters the galaxy had ever seen.
It wouldn’t be an easy fight for Anakin to win, since both young men were highly attuned to the Force. But in the end, all of Anakin’s formal training and experience in war is going to trump anything Luke ever accomplished through his training. Luke may havebeen able to defeat Darth Vader, arguably a much better duelist than Anakin ever was, but there was a small issue with that accomplishment. It seems that Vader had never intended to kill his son, but instead, turn him to the dark side over the course of their battles, meaning Vader would never have truly been going all out against his son.
