Star Warsis the second biggest franchise in movie and TV historyjust behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movies and TV shows to come out of this universe have had some of the most iconic music, characters, and quotes ever made. There are so many characters inStar Warsthat some get overlooked, such as droids. An origin story or character study of droids could be a really great tv show concept, especially if it had a similarSuicide Squadstyle story.
What even are droids? Droids areworking-class robotswho have some artificial intelligence but are used mostly just for labor. They are second-class citizens and are bought and sold like cattle. Their main purpose is to be exploited for work. They do the jobs that are too difficult, dangerous, or boring. Having a show where the droids can have a story similar toSuicide Squadwould be interesting.Suicide Squadis about a bunch of supervillains turned some-what good guys who complete dangerous missions in order to get out of prison sooner. The way they are treated in their respective worlds is already similar.

If a droid’s entire purpose is to complete tasks, then when they are no longer able and too defective to do anything else, what happens to them? What could the storyline of “Star Wars: The Droid Chronicles” or the likes be? How about a story where droids who have done something wrongget labeled as ‘defective.‘Then they’re imprisoned with other droids who are actually broken or who have also done bad things, where they are tortured or dismantled. A group of spunky, witty, and edgy droids could team up and have to figure out a way to stop whoever is in charge of this all.
Or maybe a story about some outcast droids who have committed crimes and therefore labeled ‘defective’ are hired to stop an Apex Droid from causing problems. As a recently established law due to the rising intelligence and freedoms of droids, droids who rebel against their masters or who are no longer useful are labeled defective and shunned. That is until an Apex Droid becomes an unstoppable force, and a space bounty hunter hires the help of a group ofintelligent and rebellious droidsto find and destroy the Apex Droid.
There actually already has been aStar Warsseries about droids, simply titledStar Wars: Droidsand subtitledThe Adventures of R2-D2 and C-3PO.It was a 1985 animated series that lasted one season and had 13 episodes. It isn’t too highly rated though so making a new series, especially a live-action one, with more style and flare wouldn’t be a waste. Also, it should be a through-line story; though “The Droid Chronicles” would also be a good title if it was an anthology series. It could be interesting to have different mini-stories within the show as an anthology, but one singular narrative continuation could offer more time to flesh out thecharacters and develop the plot.
Characters and personalities to fill those characters would make this show stand out. The characters inSuicide Squadare all very wacky and unpredictable in a menacing way. With either story idea, the characters in aStar Warsdroid show could have similar personalities to those in theSuicide Squad. There are also many different types of droids, and there can also be new types. There could be some more humanoid droids to help the show not feel so animated and give some room for an actor to be showcased. And the Apex Droid could be the hot new bot on the block with an actor likeHenry Cavill(The Witcher)or Katherine Langford(Knives Out).
Having some actors in costumes and makeup rather than full CGI characters would give a chance for some really cool practical effects and breakout performances. And there could be one or two full CGI droids that are the cute, misunderstood droids, like Groot inGuardians of the Galaxy. Practical effects, if done well, can be enhanced with CGI and made to look real, which would give a grungy and tangible vibe to the show, keeping it inthatSuicide Squadaesthetic.The visuals and cinematography would need to be in-your-face paired with punchy dialogue to pass off the right vibe.
Whether the show brought back old favorites or introduced new ones, it could be another great story to add to theStar Warscinematic universe. And having a clean-cut direction that sets the right tone and markets itself correctly would draw more people. No matter what story is told, there is always going to be an audience if it is in this world. The galaxy is big, and there are a lot of untold stories out there. A droid story is just one of many to tell.
