As of the time of writing, there are currently just under 900 distinct species ofPokemon. With everything from a mouse that shoots lightning to a dragon that also happens to be an apple pie,Pokemonis a series that has always sought to generate new concepts and designs. Even though some of thesePokemondesigns are met with poor receptionby fans and critics, developer Game Freak is still able to pump out plenty of newPokemonwith each new game and region.

WithPokemondesigns being inspired by anything from mythology to household objects, some fans have even made their ownPokemonand regions. Fan creations have been around for almost as long as the series ofPokemonitself, and there are some who among the artists and creators making their ownPokemonthat are seeking to create their ownfan-madePokemongame, complete with a new region andPokemonto fill it.

It appears though, that there’s no need for aPokemonfan to have a certain set of artistic skills to create their ownPokemon. As Max Woolf on Twitter has proved, all it takes to createPokemonis an AI bot and the will to force it to look at everyPokemonever created. Many fans immediately took to Twitter to praise Woolf’s creations, with some wishing for the AIPokemonto be implemented into an official title.

While the possibility of Woolf’sPokemonmaking their way to a game seems small, the AI creations certainly look as though they’d fit within a Game Freak title. As the designs are AI creations based on previousPokemon, the newly created pocket monsters hold a familiarity to them. This is by no means the first time a gamer has used AI to create a tribute or fanart for a game. One gamer used AI to create a hyper-realistic photo ofArthur Morgan fromRed Dead Redemption 2.

Though fanart and fan creations usually give brilliant hypothetical additions to thePokemongames, there are some official newPokemoncoming soon to fans. With the upcoming release ofPokemon: Legends Arceus, players are sent back in time to an early version of the Sinnoh region, once known as the Hisuian region. Hisuian variations on existingPokemonlike Growlithe, Braviary and Zoroak have already been revealed, alongside entirely newPokemonsuch as the Bug and Rock type Kleavor. It seems then, that newPokemonwill continue to be revealed so long as there are fans to create art, and new games to be released.
