It’s easy to forget that the “RP” in RPG specifically refers to the act of playing a role. The ability to take on a different persona with a different path and their own ideology can often become an afterthought amidst all the back-and-forth questing, and attempts to fulfill a destiny. Asone of the best role-playing games of all time,The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, along with many others, is an opportunity for players to jump into the boots of another character entirely, and to wile away the days ignoring the main storyline.
In a recent post on theSkyrimSubreddit, user ScoobertDoobert34 decided that, to alleviate some in-game boredom, they decided to forgo the act of killing dragons, and instead take things a little bit easier by giving guard duty a go. A short clip shows them calmly wandering around, the sun in their face, while additional guards train nearby. Despite them being a professional fighter hired to protect the city, it really does look like a peaceful life.

For those wondering about the player’s outfit, the user has said that they are usingthe “Cloaks of Skyrim” mod, which, as the name suggests, is an add-on for the game that implements almost 100 cloaks. When asked where they even got a guard’s outfit from in the first place, ScoobertDoobert34 assured those in the comments that they acquired it from an already dead NPC who had lost their life during a vampire attack in Solitude.
As well as being the keepers of peace,Skyrimguards are also something of a meme, being the ones responsible for the popular rise of the “taking an arrow to the knee” phrase, which has been something of a staple since the game released more than a decade ago. Fans are forever showing interesting things that the guards get up to in-game, either as part of their AI, or as a display of the many bugs and glitches that the Bethesda epic is quite notorious for.
As far as role-playing as a NPC goes, it might strike some as being odd that the user says they wanted to relive some boredom. Asone of the longest open-world games going,Skyrimhas so much to offer the player in terms of sights and interesting assets. But then again, that is one of the great things about an RPG, especially one as large as this. It’s an opportunity for players to choose how they live out their days within a digital world.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimis available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
