In the language of elves, Daedra translates into “not our ancestors.” This is the opposite of Adria, which can be translated into “our ancestors.” This also references how theDaedra refusedto take part in creating the world.

Daedric Princes are the most powerful of the Daedra and the most well known to the people of Tamriel. These are also the creatures that did not take part in the creation of the world, creating their own planes in Oblivion. Because they are the oldest, they are also the wisest and most known.
Most of the other Daedra were created by these Daedric Princes. These entities were created either to fill their plane of Oblivion or to serve the Prince.
