She-Hulk: Attorney at Lawhad a pretty wild finale, but one aspect of it is currently going overlooked. The opening sequence, inspired by the 1970sThe Incredible Hulktelevision show, was actually a fairly complex labour of love among the crew.
In a meta bit of fun, the usualShe-Hulkopening was instead replaced with an opening that was straight from 1978’sThe Incredible Hulkshow.Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Waltersstood in for Bill Bixby, who played the Hulk as Dr. David Banner, re-creating several scenes from the opening. As for her Hulk form, the series played homage to Lou Ferrigno, who portrayed Banner when he Hulked out, by hiring one of Maslany’s Hulk stand-ins, Devon Lewis, to portray her Hulked-out form.

According toTVLine, the recreation was entirely original.She-Hulkdirector and executive producer Kat Coiro said, “There were a couple of background plates that we ended up licensing, but we shot our own original version of everything.” Series creator Jessica Gao further gushed that the sequence was one of her favorite parts of the finale, saying, “I can’t believe we got to do it, and it wassowonderfully done. Our second unit director, Mo[nique] Ganderton, directed most of that, if not all of it, and it just lookssogreat. The editors did such a good job in making it feel exactly right.” For being one ofShe-Hulkepisode 9’s easter eggs, the sequence really hit home and was just a fun reference to an older Marvel production.
Even Maslany herself sang the praises of the sequence, saying, “Oh my God, Ilovedit. It was such a fun sequence to play, and of course when you’re pulling from something directly, you can lean into that style in such a way. Mark [Ruffalo] and I really had fun with that, it was really special. Again, it really lives in that world of how meta this world is.”She-Hulkhas had fun with meta jokes throughout its run, and in one particular instance,Mark Ruffalo loved a meta-joke reference to Edward Norton. When it came time for the show to close the curtains on its first season, it went entirely meta in a way the MCU never has before, with She-Hulk taking advantage of her fourth-wall-breaking abilities.
She-Hulkwas chockfull of references and homages, and the opening was one of the meta jokes that hit best. It was an opportunity for Marvel Studios to poke fun at itself while also honoring what came before, though in a less controversial way than the K.E.V.I.N. reveal did.
At the end of the day, the meta-commentary and cameos are what madeShe-Hulkspecial. One of the highlights of the show was seeing She-Hulk interact with the wider world of the MCU, even bringing in some of the lesser-known heroes and villains in it. Undoubtedly, her chemistry with Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) was a high point of the series, andSkaar’s cameo inShe-Hulkwas a fun addition that hinted at more to come.
She-Hulkis available to stream on Disney Plus.
