Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsfeaturesperformances from Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, and Fala Chen. Before the explosive success following the release ofSpider-Man: No Way Home,Shang-Chiwas the highest-grossing film of last year. The movie also re-frames Ben Kingsley’s original Mandarin fromIron Man 3by illuminating the real Mandarin in Wenwu (Tony Leung). ThroughoutShang-Chi, it’s revealed that doomed actor Trevor Slattery was taken prisoner by Shang-Chi’s father, where he is forced to either perform or die. When Shang-Chi, Katy (Awkwafina), and Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) discover Trevor underneath Wenwu’s compound, they meet his cute, six-legged, faceless Dijiang named Morris. Morris is from the mystical city of Ta Lo and takes inspiration from the Chinese God of Chaos. Now, Cretton has admitted that Morris' physical appearance ended up being quite the heated debate.
He recently revealed on his Instagram that screenwriter Callaham has to get a Morris tattoo after losing a ‘two-year bet.’ When the dynamic duo originally came up with the idea to put a six-legged, faceless creature inShang-Chi, they also made a deal that if Morris wasn’tcut from the finalShang-Chiedit, then Callaham “would add him to his personal tattoo collection.” The process of getting the tattoo was documented in a video Cretton shared on Instagram.
Morris' introduction inShang-Chiproved to be quite the turning point in the overall plot of the film, granting him supreme symbolic importance. Not only that but Morris and Trevor’s relationship throughout the second half of the film added some much-needed comic relief for audiences. Plus, it’s highly unlikely given the amount of critical acclaim, love, and success thatShang-Chihas received that Callaham would ever end up regretting his Morris tattoo one day.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now available on Disney Plus.
