Summary
A recent leak suggests thatCD Projekt Red may have, at one point, been working on a now-canceled expansion forCyberpunk 2077that was set on the Moon. The Polish studio’s hit sci-fi role-playing game has received a plethora of major updates over the years since its disastrous launch, but it only ever got one major piece of DLC, despite there being strong demand for additional singleplayer content. If CD Projekt Red was actually developing more expansions forCyberpunk 2077, then this latest rumor could actually give fans an idea of what the studio possibly had in mind.
Upon its launch in December 2020,Cyberpunk 2077garnered widespread criticism from fans for the shoddy technical state that it was released in. The pushback against the game was so bad, in fact, that CD Projekt Red apologized for its launch and committed to supporting the title for several more years. Some gamers were understandably skeptical of the developer, but their doubts were ultimately misproven in the long run. Throughout 2022-2023,Cyberpunk 2077had a massive comeback thanks toCyberpunk: Edgerunners—a critically-lauded anime adaptation of the title—and a major 2.0 content update that overhauled systems from the base game.DespiteCyberpunk’s resurgence, CD Projekt Red still scrapped a handful of planned features for the game, but a new leak may give a glimpse of what some of them could’ve been.

An anonymous user on 4chanposted a handful of images that allegedly depict pieces of concept art for an unreleasedCyberpunk 2077expansion that would’ve taken place on the Moon. These photos show off, among other things, potential set pieces, overviews of the Moon location, and file repositories. According to the leaker, CD Projekt Red was apparently going to make the colonies on the Moon places that players could visit in the base game, but due to being overly ambitious, the content was cut and saved for a later expansion. However, it seems that this rumored DLC was canceled in favor of prioritizing development onthe well-received expansionCyberpunk 2077: Phantom LIberty, which was released in late 2023.
This Rumored Cyberpunk 2077 Moon Expansion Will Likely Never Release
The Moon would be a refreshing new location to explore inCyberpunk. However, the chances of CD Projekt Red potentially revisiting this concept in subsequent DLC is next-to-zero, as the studio has repeatedly insisted thatCyberpunk 2077will have only one expansion, that being the aforementionedPhantom Liberty. Additionally, the developer confirmed back in May 2024 that development on the sci-fi RPG had finally ended after more than three years of content updates, with the studio now moving on to projects likeThe Witcher 4.
Although this rumored expansion may never see the light of day, it’s still possible that CD Projekt Red may make the Moon an explorable location inCyberpunk 2077’s upcoming sequel, codenamed Project Orion. It will almost certainly be years until gamers get a glimpse of what the successor toCyberpunk 2077will look like, however, so fans shouldn’t hold their breath.
