Resident Evil 8, the highly anticipated sequel in the popular survival horror franchise, will be the longest RE Engine-based game in the series, according to new information provided on Twitter earlier this week.

In a small exchange on the social media platform, Twitter user @AestheticGamer1, also known as Dusk Golem on message boards, provided the information while doing a Q&A. Dusk Golem has a precedence for providing inside scoops on the series, last year they revealedResident Evil 3would be remadewell before the official announcement and that the game would release sooner than expected. And now they’ve revealed thatResident Evil 8may be the longest RE Engine-based game to date.

The rumor specifically relates to RE engine games but it will be interesting to see what this means in comparison to other games in the series.Resident Evil 4, which has been the longest game in the series, could take well over 15 hours to complete on an initial play through while the multiple campaigns inResident Evil 6can total well over 20 hours. Thus far RE engine games have come just under 12 hours for newcomers so even ifResident Evil 8is a bit longer it can still be a pretty lengthy experience. This would be quite a contrast to the recent release of theResident Evil 3remake, which was criticized formissing locationsand its much shorter experience.

Resident Evil 8made waves when it was officially announced at thePlayStation 5 reveal eventin June. The game will once again follow Ethan Winters, this time in a European setting. Though not much is known about the story, the trailer focused on a Gothic setting with castles, old villages, and werewolves. One surprising aspect of the game thus far is the actions of long time protagonist Chris Redfield, who seems to have gone rogue and killed Ethan’s wife.

Ethan’s journey already seems like it will be more open and expanded when looking at the reveal trailer in comparison toResident Evil 7. The trailer featured several outdoor locations andexpansive areasas well as castles and small villages.Resident Evil 7was a much more linear experience with narrow corridors, cramped locals, and a small outdoor area akin to the originalResident Evil.

Meanwhile, Capcom has promised more information regardingResident Evil 8would be revealed this summer with a possibility of that happening later this month in a newPlayStation 5 event video. So while the game may not be out for a while, fans can expect a few more details heading their way soon regarding gameplay, story and settings.
