To celebrate its upcoming seventh anniversary,PlayerUnknown’s Battlegroundshas released its 2024 roadmap, with huge features on the way, including destructible environments and a new game engine. The new list of features promises to makePUBGfeel like a totally fresh experience all over again, even for veteran players.

Since its release in 2017,PUBGhas established itself as one of thebest battle royale gameson the market. Along withZ1 Battle Royale(formerlyH1Z1) and mods forDayZ,PUBGis credited with popularizing the battle royale genre, which now, with games such asFortnite,Apex Legends, andCall of Duty: Warzone, is arguably the most popular type of game around.PUBGhas done a great job at keeping itself relevant through constant updates over the years, and given its comprehensive 2024 roadmap, it isn’t going anywhere yet.

In a blog post on theofficialPUBGsite, the full roadmap for 2024 was revealed. Among the reveals was the news thatPUBGwill be transitioning to Unreal Engine 5, with a User Generated Content (UGC) service in development alongside this move. UGC would be massive for the game, and could boost the player count similarly to whenPUBGwent free-to-playin 2022. On top of this, 2024 will also see destructible environments come toPUBG, including the ability to “carve out new attack routes or construct defensive barriers.” In the post, the developer “hopes to go beyond mere environmental destruction, infusing the game with an enriched layer of strategy and tactics.”

Although those changes are among the biggest, there are still plenty of other features for thePUBGcommunity to get excited about this year. Combat-related updates are planned for every two months, and they will be introduced via Gunplay Labs in the Arcade first for testing before bringing them to Normal and Ranked matches. This could make one of thehardest online multiplayer gameseven more difficult, as players continually adapt to a new meta each time gunplay changes are made.

Since the game’s initial launch in 2017, so much hasimproved and changed with PUBG in the years since, with fans appreciating the developer’s continued commitment to enhancing the experience. The game remains among the most played games on Steam on a daily basis, competing with other powerhouses such asCounter-Strike 2andDota 2. It’s a testament to the developer’s dedication toPUBGthat it’s able to still draw in new and returning players in such numbers, and it looks set to follow this trend going into 2024.
