APsychonauts 2Fig backer has revealed what the “physical copy” looks like, and they aren’t happy.Psychonauts 2reinvigorated the lapsed franchisewhen it was released through the help of crowdfunding, but some fans are unhappy with the rewards for their support.
Many games have been released thanks to crowdfunding over the years. The games released over the years through Kickstarter, Fig, and more includeShovel Knight,Divinity: Original Sin 2, andPsychonauts 2. WhilePsychonauts 2received $3.3 million on the now defunct Fig,Microsoft quickly acquired its developer, Double Fine. Among the rewards that backers expected are plushies, art books, and physical copies ofPsychonauts 2. As somePsychonauts 2fans have already shared their rewards, the latter has some backers displeased.

Reddit user Thesaxmaniac recently shared an image of their physical copy ofPsychonauts 2. According to Thesaxmaniac, they were one of the $100 backers known as Psi-cadets. Thesaxmaniac had requested the physical edition ofPsychonauts 2for PC and Mac, but what they received in the mail wasn’t exactly what they had in mind. The photo of the Mac and PC edition reveals that physical copies were simply on a USB that came with aPsychonauts 2-themed keychain. Because backers may have expected a box with a disc in it like the originalPsychonautsfeatured, what Fig and Double Fine consider physical seems a bit different.
While it’s unclear what kind of tin the USB in Thesaxmaniac’s photo is resting in, it likely featuresPsychonauts 2artlike the keychain. Thesaxmaniac stated that they weren’t expecting a big PC box because fans could acquire that through other methods, but they thought it would come in a DVD case. The earlyPsychonauts 2backer also confirmed that they have an external disc drive that they intended to play the game on. Because more modern PCs have USB ports than disc drives, this physical edition may still be playable for anyone who backed the game.
Although Thesaxmaniac didn’t receive a boxed copy, thePsychonauts 2collector’s editionbackers may have gotten the real deal. According to Thesaxmaniac, a higher tier reward may have been what they were expecting rather than the $100 tier. ConsideringPsychonauts 2received support from over 24,000 backers, some may still be waiting on their rewards. While Fig no longer participates in crowdfunding, it’s currently unclear why it took so long for Thesaxmaniac and others to get their rewards.
Psychonauts 2is available now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
