Summary

Recent leaks and rumors surrounding the next mainlinePokemongame point towards a potential sequel toPokemon Legends: Arceusset in Gen 5’s Unova Region. After the success ofPokemon Legends: Arceus, it makes a lot of sense for the series to follow it up with another game in the same style set in a different region’s past, but finding a mascot with the same amount of lore potential as Arceus might be tricky. While it might not follow the same conventions established byPokemon Legends: Arceus, the mascot of aPokemon LegendsUnova game already seems clear.

Pokemon Black and Whitefollowed the trend set by Gen 4 of introducing a wide variety of new Legendary and Mythical mons to the series. Not only did these games introduce the Legendaries Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem, but they included two other trios of Legendaries as well as the Mythicals Victini, Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect. Although any of these mons could make for interesting mascots in their own right, rather than focusing on one of the four Mythicals, aPokemon LegendsUnovashould break with its predecessor and feature the Legendary Kyurem as its mascot.

Kyurem Would be the Most Likely Legendary Mascot of a Pokemon Legends Unova

AlthoughKyurem is featured heavily inPokemon Black 2 and White 2, there is still a lot more lore to this mon that could be explored in aPokemon LegendsUnova game. Legends from the Unova Region’s Lacunosa Town tell of an extraterrestrial creature that fell from the sky, creating the Giant Chasm, and that this creature would come out at night to eat people from the village. If this event takes place around the time aPokemon LegendsUnova game is set, then players could potentially see the truth of this legend play out in the game.

Another theory about the existence of Kyurem is that it is the shell that was left behind when a powerful dragon split into Reshiram and Zekrom. Lore within the Gen 5 games states that Reshiram and Zekrom were once one dragon that helped shape the founding of theUnova Region, but was split into two halves by the two founding brothers of Unova due to their disagreement on the value of truth versus ideals. As a result, Reshiram and Zekrom were created and the remnants of this dragon were theorized to become Kyurem, which would explain why it is able to fuse with Reshiram or Zekrom inPokemon Black 2 and White 2.

The plot of aPokemon LegendsUnova game could combine these stories, following the founding of the Unova Region and giving players a look at that original dragon. However, following the split into Reshiram and Zekrom, the remaining being that is Kyurem could start attacking Lacunosa Town, leading the player to search for a way to stop it and contain its rage. This story would be a great way to tie up some loose threads in the lore of Gen 5 while still sticking to the theme ofPokemon as dangerous creatures found inPokemon Legends: Arceus.

There are a variety of ways other Legendaries and Mythicals could come into play in this game as well even if Kyurem is the game’s main focus. Perhaps the Swords of Justice, Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion, as well as Keldeo end up working alongside humans to fight off Kyurem, or maybe the game could feature the discovery of the ancient fossilized creature that would eventually be revived and modified intoGenesect. With it becoming more and more likely that the next mainlinePokemongame will take place in Unova, fans might finally get to see some of these theories play out.
