When the Gen 3 Bug Pokemon Wurmple was first added toPokemon GO, it was a major mystery for many fans. Long-timePokemonfans know thatWurmple has two diverging evolutions, either into Cascoon and then Dustox or into Silcoon and then Beautifly. However, the “how” in this situation has never really been solved.
When Wurmple was first released, there was a ton of stories.Eevee can evolve inPokemon GOby having certain nicknames to guarantee a certain outcome, so many thought the same of Wurmple. When this was proven false, many thought it was tied to the Pokemon’s stats, as Wurmple’s evolution was tied to its beauty elsewhere. And so the circus carried on, trying to figure out if IVs played into it, ifPokemon GO’s new (at the time) weather system had to do anything with it, and more. In short, there’s a lot of theories but not a lot of answers.

It seems a resurgence in this mystery is on the rise due to thePokemon GOThrowback challenges. What better way than to relieve the early, glory days of Pokemon GO than to explore a mystery then that persists until now. Luckily, there’s not a challenge in this new event that requires players to either evolve Wurmple into one or the other, although there is one for catching abug Pokemon inPokemon GO, and Wurmple qualifies for that.
The answer to the mystery at the end of the day is that it’s random. There’s no other option, and nothing that has been found as long as Wurmple has been in the game indicates anything else. For those just now coming to the game thanks to itsimproved social distancing measuresor those who are generally unfamiliar with the mainline Pokemon games, there is good news. Wurmple’s evolution is random, but it’s not complex and is an easy determiner.
Wurmple requires 12 Wurmple Candy to evolve, after which it will require 50 Wurmple Candy to obtain its final form. Bug Pokemon have always evolved quicker in the main games, so this is representative of that. Wurmple’s first evolution is random, but it’ll either evolve into Silcoon or Cascoon. At this point, the variability factor no longer applies. Silcoon will evolve into Beautifly regardless of anything done at this point, whereas Cascoon will evolve into Dustox regardless inPokemon GO.
What this means if that someone who has a Dustox can turn their Cascoon evolutions into candy in order to attempt for a Silcoon evolution in order to unlock that Beautifly. It’s not the most intuitive system, especially for individuals with serious bad luck, but neither is it really a difficult grind inPokemon GO. There’s a 50/50 shot at each evolution, so solidify the second and then the third evolution is on lock, andmove forward withPokemon GO’s new offerings.
