One player of Nintendo and Game Freak’s classic titlesPokemon Sun and Mooncame across an unusual graphical glitch that gave their Larvitar a cooler, more intimidating appearance. Some fans of the duo of beloved 3DS titles were excited when several of theGeneration 7 Pokemon were added toPokemon GOlast year, giving franchise fans a chance to revisit some of their favorite creatures fromPokemon Sun and Moon.

Released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016,Pokemon Sun and Moonwere launched in tandem with the 20th anniversary of thePokemonfranchise. The start of the seventh generation of Pokemon games,Pokemon Sun and Moonwere set in the aquatic Alola region and tasked players with exploring the game’s Hawaii-inspired islands as they attempted to learn more about the mysterious Ultra Beasts. The games were generally well-received by players and received an enhanced, updated release in the form ofPokemon Ultra Sun and Moononly a year later. Several of the seventh-generation Pokemon would go on to become fan favorites, with oneSun and Moonfan evenmodding the flying Pokemon Rowlet intoSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.

In a new post on the r/Pokemon subreddit, user Silver_Sonic_23 shared screenshots of a graphical glitch they encountered in an emulated copy ofPokemon Sun and Moonthat gave their Larvitar a decidedly darker, cooler look. Already appearing angsty thanks to its permanent scowl and glaring red eye, the bug adorned Larvitar with black patches across its body and gave the Pokemon a darker, more fearsome appearance. Fans of the rock-type Pokemon saw it take the spotlight in Niantic’s popular mobile AR game earlier this year as part ofPokemon GO’s Larvitar Community Day Classic Special Research task.

Fans ofPokemon Sun and Moonresponding to the post were entertained by the unusual graphical glitch. One reply pointed out that the bugged Larvitar looked like one of the clones from the firstPokemonmovie, with another comment in the same vein joking that it “Looks like Mewtwo’s at it again.” Other posts made light of the now goth-looking Pokemon’s undeniably edgy makeover, leading one Redditor to quip “It’s not just a glitch, mom! It’s who I am!” Another reply thought the bugged and blackened Larvitar looked like it had been the victim of a Curse Mark fromNaruto’s villainous Orochimaru.

While this dark and edgy version of Larvitar may be nothing more than a graphical glitch, it still manages to provide a cool new take on a classic Pokemon. And unlike the glitch that resulted in aPokemon Scarlet and Violetplayer destroying an entire town with a Pokeball, Silver_Sonic_23 probably doesn’t have to worry about his bug wiping a city off the map.

Pokemon Sun and Moonare available for the Nintendo 3DS.
