Overwatchis at the forefront of team-based first-person shooters and this is due in part to its interesting character selection. With this in mind, many fans were excited about the reveal of the hero Echo and they will be becoming familiar with the characters playing style. The early designs by theOverwatchteam for the character have surfaced and they reveal that the powerful character could have been very different.

The latestOverwatchupdate added to existing characters, but the addition of Echo has drawn the attention of most players. The latest addition to the game is likely to be one of the final updates that the game has, as Blizzard looks set to produce a sequel of the incredibly successful title. It seems that the developers had plenty of ideas for Echo and many will hope this kind of inspiration continues in the eventual sequel.

The ideas for Echo that were scrapped may have worked well within the game but they likely didn’t matchthe story of the characteror integrate the rest of the playing field. The abandoned ideas include an “Echo Image” that multiplied the character, wing projectiles and boomerang actions with their wings. These would have been deadly moves, but the character moved in a different direction. The alternative avenue for the character that went forward may have been a good idea, as there are not many players who can complain about the moves that Echo ended up with. It is unclear at what stage of development these concept pieces were created, but it seems to be relatively early as the face of the character is radically different.

Echo’s ult also went through a range of different concepts with some larger transformations than the mirroring “Duplicate” that fans are seeing today. While many will be happy withthe abilities of Echo, it would have been interesting to see how these ideas played out. It is common practice to explore a variety of avenues when creating a character and it is apparent that Echo had a particularly interesting journey before becoming the fully formed entity that players have now.

Fans ofOverwatchwill be happy with the frequent updates they are still receiving, although the addition of new characters will continue debates about who arethe best heroes to play as. While players have received a powerful character with unique abilities, this leaked concept art will make fans wonder what could have been if different choices had been made.
