This has been a good week for People Can Fly’sOutriders, a sci-fi looter shooter game that released back on April 1st this year and quickly managed to become one of the most played games on many different platforms. Whether its success is due to the gameplay itself, the grind for loot, the cool aesthetics, the story, the title being released on day one on the Xbox Game Pass, or the marketing campaign from PCF, Square Enix has been taking notes. Just a few days ago, People Can Fly posted a series of infographics on Twitter, revealing data regarding many game elements and what players achieved as a community, and also stated that there is the possibility thatOutriderswill be expanded in some way in the near future.
This was received as extremely good news becauseOutridersplayers do want to know more about Enoch, thefuture of the human race, the Pax, the Ferals, and much more, while also having the chance to get new loot and possibly have the level cap increased. Square Enix noted how the game getting over 3.5 million unique players worldwide in less than two months is an amazing milestone, and the publisher house went as far as saying thatOutriderscould be its next major franchise. This adds new layers to People Can Fly’s statement about expandingOutriderswith a DLC but this could mean that the game is getting a sequel, instead.

Outriders: DLC, Sequel, Narrative Set-Up, And More
Outridersleaves a few questions unansweredwith its story arc and alien races, so this does bode well for both a DLC and a new game entirely, as there are many things to explore still. A DLC could involve a new chapter in the game’s story, building on the foundations ofOutriders' narrative thus far, and maybe the addition of extra endgame content, new legendary items and sets, and possibly even a new starting class. Being an original sci-fi setting,Outridersdoes a great job at creating a world that can easily be broadened in many directions, leaving a lot of doors open if PCF wants to do more with its game.
How would a sequel work, though, from a narrative standpoint? The premise ofOutridersis that mankind is leaving Earth to get to another similar planet, called Enoch, because of environmental factors and possibly weapons of mass destruction taking their toll on the planet, rendering it uninhabitable. Upon the arrival on Enoch, though, the Outriders find out that there is a strange signal coming from somewhere, and that this new planet is ridden withAnomaly stormsthat tear human bodies apart. The main character is injured and is left in cryo, only to wake up 31 years later and discover that they are one of the few Outriders left and that Enoch has turned into a warzone.

With this in mind, players navigate thestory ofOutridersknowing that there can be only a bunch of other soldiers of their kind left, including Jakub. This means that a sequel toOutriderswould probably involve new characters born on Enoch, maybe trained for the war that raged all over the planet, and at some point, they became “altered” by the Anomaly. It’s unlikely that a sequel can still let players control an Outrider, making the sequel inherently very different.
The sequel, much like aDLC forOutriders, could explore the way that the events of the current game had an impact on the people living on Enoch, or further expand the lore of the Pax and reveal if there are survivors. Again, withOutriders' set-up, there are plenty of options for both People Can Fly and Square Enix to choose from. Hopefully, the new chapters in the history ofOutridersare going to be as compelling as the first.
Outridersis available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
