Holiday events in MMOs have historically been near mandatory, delivering a feeling of a living world changing with the seasons while at the same time keeping content fresh.New World, up to this point, hasn’t fully delivered on holiday expectations. Its Halloween offerings left much to be desired, though it was just a month after launch and Amazon had other priorities. Looking forward, however,New Worldseems to have bigger plans for the winter season.
In an interview with PCGamesN,New Worldgame director Scot Lane provided some insight into Amazon’sseasonal plans for the MMO. Asked if Amazon is considering seasonal changes for future content drops, Lane responded in the affirmative. Further, asked if the devs are moving forward with those plans, Lane again responded with a, “Yes.” Lane also confirmed, disappointingly, that he isn’t able to share much about those plans. He did, however, offerNew Worldplayers a tantalizing tease.

Lane says with a figurative wink and nod, “winter is a great time for festivals.” Suffice to say, Lane is tellingNew Worldplayers that they should expect some kind of winter or holiday event to be introduced to the MMO eventually. It could be as thin as theHalloweenstore bundle or it could be a full-fledged MMO event with holiday cheer spread throughout the world.New Worldplayers will just have to wait and see.
While Lane doesn’t mention it outright, there really should be an asterisk associated with his tease. That’s becauseNew Worldis currently dealing with a variety of issues, including upcoming and very necessaryserver merges, gold duplication exploits that have frozen the MMO’s economy, and other pressing problems. What that means is that Amazon has its hands full, which could lead to plans changing. Anything is possible when the state of a game is tumultuous.
Even though Amazon could theoretically postpone holiday content to focus on fixing any number of existing serious issues, it would likely be a last resort. As an MMO, even without a subscription,New Worldneeds to produce fresh contentrapidly to keep players engaged. Otherwise, players will go play something else that does have new content.
With the end of November nearing, it’s just a matter of time beforeNew Worldwould be expected to share any plans for a winter holiday. In fact, Land’s willingness to mention possible winter festivities could imply an announcement is coming very soon.New Worldplayerswill certainly be waiting impatiently going forward.
