Mortal Kombat 12has received yet another teaser, and this one has some serious implications for the future of the franchise’s story.Mortal Kombat 12was announced ahead of its official reveal by an executive that let the cat out of the bag early, but now the official teasers are starting to roll in.

ThefirstMortal Kombat 12teaserwas extremely brief, coming at the very end of a video celebrating the long-running fighting game franchise’s 30th anniversary. The teaser show what appeared to be an hourglass being tipped over with grains of sand falling out. The video then zoomed in on one specific grain of sand that then exploded. This seemed to suggest thatMortal Kombat 12would be following up on the conclusion ofMortal Kombat 11and more specifically itsAftermathexpansion.

Now it seems thatMortal Kombat 12may be rebooting the story and rolling things back to the very beginning. The newMortal Kombat 12teaser shows a close-up of a ticking clock. The clock hand reaches 11, shakes violently, skips over 12, and then lands at 1. While this could be interpreted in a number of ways, it seems to be suggesting thatMortal Kombat 12’s storywill be a reboot and start from scratch, though it’s entirely possible that this teaser means something else. Ultimately, fans can only speculate until more official details are shared forMortal Kombat 12.

Alternatively, perhaps this is a suggestion that aMortal Kombatremake or remaster is in the works. Reports have indicated that aMortal Kombatremastered collectionwas in development at one point before getting scrapped, so perhaps that idea is being revisited. Again, fans will have to wait for more official information before they’ll really know for sure what to expect from the newMortal Kombatgame.

Luckily, more information on the nextMortal Kombatshould be coming sooner rather than later. Industry insiders have suggested that thebigMortal Kombat 12revealcould be happening later this month. It’s also been suggested that a PlayStation showcase will happen this month as well, which would mark the perfect opportunity to pull the curtain back onMortal Kombat 12. Alternatively, the Xbox Games Showcase is happening on June 11, so maybeMortal Kombat 12will have its grand reveal there instead. Of course, it may be revealed through other means as well, so fans will just have to wait and see what happens.
