Spawn has joinedMortal Kombat 11,becoming available in early access toMortal Kombat 11players with the game’s Kombat Pack. Those hoping to buy Spawn by himself will have to wait a week longer, although players who have access to Spawn now have noticed one surprising thing. Spawn comes with two base skins for players to choose from, one skin is Spawn’s usual black and white skin, while the other looks startlingly like a Deadpool skin.
To be clear, Spawn’s alternate skin is not aDeadpool skin– it’s a simple recolor of Spawn’s normal skin. The model itself doesn’t change in any significant way and there are no big details pointing toward it being Deadpool related. Other than the coloring, it’s very much just Spawn. The coloring does hint at Deadpool, however. It features blood-red coloring with black accents across the entire skin, very much like Deadpool’s costume. Spawn’s glowing eyes also add to the Deadpool look.

The Spawn skin’s coloring looks so much like Deadpool that one of the antihero’s original creators even noticed.Rob Liefeld, the iconic and controversial comic book writer and artist, posted a photo of Spawn’s red skin to Twitter. “So Spawn in Mortal Kombat has a DEADPOOL skin??? Nice.” is all Liefeld has to say. NetherRealm may see this as a warning, though, as Liefeld is notoriously prone to filing lawsuits.
If even one of the creators of Deadpool can see whatNetherRealmwas going for, then the connection must be clear– it’s not just anyone’s imagination. And given NetherRealm’s propensity for adding in references as it’s able, it’s safe to say this was very intentional.
That said, it’s still just a recolored skin. There are no Deadpool audio lines and no unique animations that would be more appropriate for Deadpool, justSpawnwith a blood-red suit.
Spawn is the final DLC character inMortal Kombat 11’s Kombat Pack. There are rumors that asecond Kombat Packis in the works, though. If any ofMortal Kombat 11’s potential future DLC characters haven’t been decided on yet, now NetherRealm knows who should be at the top of the list. How great would it be to have a dual katana-wielding Deadpool fighting alongside Spawn, the Joker, and theMortal Kombat 11roster? Expect news about future DLC plans in the months to come.
Mortal Kombat 11is available now on Google Stadia, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
