Summary
Minecraft Dungeons' support has come to an end, according to developer Mojang. This comes a year afterMinecraft Dungeons' Luminous Night Event, its last notable new content.
Minecraft’s runaway success has led tomultipleMinecraftspin-off gamesthat divert from it genre-wise, not only expanding upon the lore of the cuboid world, but also as a clever means to draw in players who might be turned off by the main game’s creativity-oriented sandbox style. Released in 2020,Minecraft Dungeonsis the third of such spin-offs and is an isometric, hack-and-slash dungeon crawler with an emphasis on multiplayer and a complete lack of a mining or crafting system. It has received mixed reviews, garnering praise for its charm and presentation, but losing points for its simplicity and use of procedural generation for its dungeons. Still, it hasn’t stopped Mojang from supporting it through six DLC campaigns and various content updates.

Even for players who enjoyed this spin-off, “every journey has an end,” according to Mojang. The developers posted a status update onMinecraft Dungeons, stating that there are no plans to update or continue the adventure past its current Version 1.17 update. Coinciding with the five-year anniversary of its announcement, Mojang revealed thatDungeonsnow has 25 million unique players and thanked everyone who chose to pick it up. The company went on to describe the game’s history, detailing its origins as a passion project inspired by the developers' love for dungeon crawlers.
However, Mojang went on to state that there are no plans for a new DLC chapter or even a new update, as it plans to move on and expand theMinecraftuniverse even further with new projects. Such projects most likely includethe very recently-releasedMinecraft Legends, a real-time strategy and action title. Mojang further claimed that players' journeys inDungeonshad not come to an end, given the multiple difficulties and randomized tower. The blog post ends with the developers thanking those who have supported the game, referring to them as awesome, and promising to “see [them] in the dungeons!”
WhileMinecraft Dungeonsis no longer being continued, there are thankfully no plans to shut down its online multiplayer servers any time soon, enabling players to keep the fun going if they so choose. TheMinecraft Dungeons: Ultimate Editionis also availablefor players who might have missed out, and it contains all six DLC chapters.
Minecraft Dungeonsis available in arcades, as well as on PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
