When it comes to getting games to run on systems that the game was not designed to be compatible with,Doomoften takes the crown on that front. There have been so manyweird things thatDoomhas been ported tothat it’s basically become a meme at this point. However, that may be fine for a game that came out in the mid-1990s, but someone out there has posed the question of whether or not it’s possible to getGrand Theft Auto 5to showcase on a console that came out in the late 1980s.

In a recent video uploaded to YouTube, Sebastian Staacks has been demonstrating a WiFi-enabled cartridge that slots into the back of an original Nintendo Game Boy. Among numerous things, Staacks has shown that it’s possible to playGTA 5through the 33-year-old system. Of course, it should be pointed out that the console isn’t actually running the game using its own hardware. A technical breakdown of how it works has been uploaded by the creator, with the code available for others to use.

Still, it really does look like the game is running on theclassic 1989 Nintendo handheld system, complete with monochrome green graphics, and even enabling the use of the console’s buttons to control the game. As well as this, Staacks was also asked to showcaseCrysisand, of course, the originalDoomrunning in the same way, which they were able to do with decent frame rate.

The Game Boy was a landmark piece of gaming technology at the time, being something of a phenomenon upon release, and selling more than 118 million units worldwide. Those who missed out on it can still get theAnalogue Pocket which runs all of the Game Boy’s back catalog.

Overall, Staack’s video is very impressive, and it shows just how much dedication the fan base has when it comes to modding games, making them run, or appear to run, on older technology. WithGTA 5still topping the sales charts, it begs the question of whether or not there will be new ways to emulate the 2013 title on perhaps even older systems. It seems as though the community is doing what it can to keep itself busy while it waits for any news aboutGrand Theft Auto 6.

Grand Theft Auto 5is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
