The popularMinecraftspin off,Minecraft Dungeons, gives players a breadth of options for platforms. Some prefer to complete their quest on Switch, while others may find the experience more rewarding on PC. There are also PS4 and Xbox One versions available, both of whichcan be played on the new PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles thanks to backwards compatibility. As if that wasn’t enough, Mojang Studios is porting the game to yet another platform, although this one is unexpected to say the least. Soon, players will be able to experience the chaotic fun ofMinecraft Dungeonsin arcade form thanks to the hard work of Play Mechanix, but there’s a unique twist.
One of the major parts ofMinecraft Dungeonsis acquiring gear and leveling up the player’s character, so it stands to reason that this would need to translate over to the arcade version as well. Unfortunately, by nature of being an arcade game, it isn’t possible to make separate save files for every player, so Mojang Studios has devised a unique solution to this problem.

Whenever someone plays a round of aMinecraft Dungeonsarcade cabinet, they will earn one of 60 physical cards. These cards can be one of five types, those being melee, ranged, armor, pet, or skin. Before starting a game, players can scan one card of each type in order to outfit their hero for the coming challenges. As these are physical cards, they can also be collected or traded, but their primary purpose will be tocreate powerful builds for use in laterMinecraft Dungeonssessions.
In terms of the actual gameplay, Mojang Studios confirms that there are nine levels, and although the gameplay will be similar to the console versions, there will be some differences. Will Carlin, the creative director at Play Mechanix, uses a metaphor to explain the difference between the two games. If a home release ofMinecraft Dungeonsis like a waltz, then an arcade version needs to be “some kind of super break-dancing speed experience.” He emphasizes how important it is to make each moment intense since the experience will be much more short-lived than that of a typicalMinecraft Dungeonssession.
Some of these arcade cabinets will be distributed across North America for testing purposes, but Mojang Studios reassures fans that they will only go toarcades that follow local health guidelinesso that this won’t influence the spread of the pandemic. It remains to be seen when these arcade machines will become more mainstream, but players should keep an eye out at their local arcades in the coming months.
Minecraft Dungeonsis available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, and later as an Arcade game.
