Summary

According to recently leaked information, the next Meta Quest VR headset, theMeta Quest 4, may be released in 2026. The leak also revealed some details regarding the nextMeta QuestPro headset.

The Meta Quest has performed extremely well among its VR headset competitors over the years. While the original Meta/Oculus Quest wasn’t as powerful as its tethered competitors, the ability to play games or enjoy virtual reality experiences without the need for external sensors or cables won over many gamers. Since then, the system has undergone upgrades that have improved performance and graphics, withthe Meta Quest 3 being the most recentrelease. However, it seems Meta is already looking ahead to the future of the device series.

This new leak comes viaThe Information, which spoke to three individuals who have supposedly worked on the devices. According to the leak, the Meta Quest 4 will come in two different varieties. One will be the “standard” model, codenamed Pismo Low, while the “premium” model is codenamed Pismo High. At this time, no information has been shared regarding the specifications of the headsets and how they’ll improve upon the Quest 3.

Meanwhile, the follow-up to theMeta Quest Pro, codenamed La Jolla, is supposedly also in development and will allegedly ship in 2027. Prior leaks have suggested that this headset will feature a higher resolution than the current device, which has an 1800×1920 resolution per eye. The headset will reportedly also keep the battery at the back of the device, which some users have reported has helped to maintain balance and comfort while wearing the headset.

Meta’s Plan for the Quest Headsets Before the Quest 4

As the Meta Quest 3 came out in 2023, it may surprise some to learn that three years could pass before the next upgrade launches. This may be due to the proposed release ofthe Meta Quest 3S, though, which may be replacing the Meta Quest 2 on store shelves. Prior leaks and reports have claimed the Meta Quest 3S will be more affordable than the current device, and will scale back on things like resolution to bring down the cost. However, it should still be a significant improvement over the Meta Quest 2’s specs, potentially making it an inviting step-up without the full investment towards a Meta Quest 3.

Until Meta announces something official, VR enthusiasts should take these leaks with a grain of salt. The priorities at the company have shifted somewhat in recent times, withMeta putting more focus on AI, so it’s not out of the question for any of these headsets to be scrapped or their release windows changed.
