Summary

APokemonfan compiled the elemental types of all available Pokemon as of the ninth game generation and posted an incredible chart that broke down each type combination by the numbers. ThePokemontype chart maker shared their handiwork on social media with other trainers and received compliments for their long efforts.

ThoughPokemon Red and Bluestarted with 15 unique Pokemon types, the games were limited in the type combinations that could be made for the 151 critters native to the Kanto region. However,Pokemon Gold and Silverbumped the type count to 17 when the Dark and Steel types were introduced. This change also applied retroactively to the Pokemon Magnemite and Magneton, as both were reclassified as Electric and Steel. However, the series would not see a new type introduced for over a decade, untilPokemon X and Ybrought the Fairy-type Pokemonas the series' 18th type.

Though 18 Pokemon types exist, as ofPokemon Scarlet and Violet, one fan sought to bring them together in a digestible format. A Redditor named JJKDowell shared an incredible chart on the r/Pokemon subreddit that listed each single and dual-type combination in the main series. For the sake of consistency, various forms such as Mega Evolution and regional variants were included. After taking stock of 1,196 uniquePokemonforms, the chart concluded thatthe Water-type Pokemon are the most commonly used single type, with 79 different species. In the second and third spots are the Normal and Grass types, which have 76 and 49 total Pokemon each. As for dual-type combos, Normal and Flying Pokemon such as Pidgeot and Toucannon make up the majority, with 28 total members across 14 evolution families.

With both single and dual-type combinations accounted for, Water-type Pokemon still stand atop the charts with 168 individual varieties. The Normal and Grass types also retained their respective spots with 143 and 142 total members. JJKDobbins stated that Water and Normal types combined make up for 13% of all known Pokemon. Though the Steel type is the least used singlePokemontype with a headcount of 14, the Ice type is the least utilized among all available type combinations, at 64. At the bottom of the chart, unique type combos such as Empoleon’s Water and Steel types, were listed.Nine unusedPokemontype combinations, such as Fairy and Fire, were given an honorable mention.

JJKDowell was praised by otherPokemonfans for their work. WithMega Evolutions returning inPokemon Legends: Z-A, only time will tell if any of the nine unused type combinations will appear.
