Summary
Hades 2continues where the previous game left off but with a new protagonist. It centers aroundthe mythology of Melinoeand how she traverses the Underworld and the surface to stop the plans of her grandfather, Chronos. Although the journey focuses on her story, it isn’t a secret that some members of her direct family could also play a significant role in her battle against the Titan of Time. This means the developers may be considering the return of a popular character from the originalHadesand using him in ways that will make the sequel more interesting.
WithHades 2still being in early access, Supergiant Games could still change the story of Melinoe and the characters she’s involved with. The plot has made it clear that she aims to stop her grandfather, Chronos, from his nefarious plans of overtaking Olympus and hopefully reclaim the family she thought was lost. While certain members do make an appearance, one in particular has not shown his presence as yet. Her brother, Zagreus, is still absent in the game’s early access state, which clouds the possibility of him returning in the sequel. He was a very well-received character in the previous title, meaning the developers shouldn’t ignore any opportunities to use him.

How Zagreus Can Be Used in Melinoe’s Story
While there’s no tellingwhereHades 2’s story will go following early access, it is at least guaranteed that Melinoe will stop at nothing until she reunites with her family. With her brother being one of the members that she could potentially meet, here are a few ways he could be reintroduced:
Any of this can potentially helpHades 2in presenting its story better than the first game. Making Zagreus a part of the plot, even if it’s a minor role, could signal veterans of the original game to play the sequel and make it more popular. The character’s reintroduction also benefits new players as it may get them interested enough to play the firstHades, giving them more roguelike action and a compelling story to enjoy.
Zagreus May Not Appear in Hades 2 After All
WhileZagreus' role in Hades 2 may be clearto some, there’s no guarantee he will be used at all in the sequel. If his presence is absent, it may be beneficial for Supergiant Games to develop a third game that involves him. His good humor, reckless behavior, and persistent attitude drew many to like him as a protagonist, making it reasonable for people to want to play him again.
As fun as it would be to control the son of Hades in the sequel, the spotlight should not be taken away from Melinoe as it is a game tailored to her plot and new playstyle. A third game opens up more opportunities, one being an option that allows players to swap between using Zagreus or Melinoe. It also allows them to embark on a journey together, allowing the developers to dive deeper into their mythology and open up more possibilities for content.
Hades 2’s Melinoe plays nothing like Zagreus, and she has enough unique qualities that separate her from her brother. However, it’s because of these differences between the two that make them likable characters in their own right. While Melinoe is rising in popularity, her brother has established himself as a beloved figure within the community, one many would love to see reappear in the sequel. Even if he doesn’t, Supergiant Games should not rule out the possibility of using such a popular character again. For now, fans can only speculate if Zagreus returns in the sequel or an entirely new game in the future.
