Summary

One ofGod of War’s biggest selling points has always been its mythological boss battles. TheoriginalGod of Warseriesback in the mid-late 2000s was renowned for its large-scale, climactic boss fights, with players getting to battle against all-powerful gods like Poseidon, Ares, and Zeus himself. Each of these boss fights took players to gigantic arenas, and often saw them facing off against threats that were 10 times their size. While the scale of these boss fights has been drastically decreased in the recentGod of Warduology, the personal stakes have remained higher than ever.

2018’sGod of Warmay not have the most bombastic boss battles, but it does have some of the most personal in franchise history, with Kratos having to protect his son Atreus against a number of Norse gods including Baldur, and Thor’s sons Modi and Magni. These personal stakes only continue to ramp up inGod of War Ragnarok, with Kratos facing off against Thor right off the bat, and then Heimdall, and eventually the big bad Odin. It seems likely that this trend is only going to continue, and with a half-sequel rumored to be on the way, there’s a perfect high-stakes boss waiting in the wings already.

A God of War Ragnarok Half-Sequel Could End with an Atreus Vs. Sindri Boss Fight

Fans have been speculating about aGod of War Ragnaroksequel practically since the moment the game released back in November of last year. Rather than end on a definitive note,Ragnarokleaves a good few plot threads hanging even after credits roll, which fans immediately took to mean that a sequel or spin-off of some kind was on its way. Well, according to a new rumor that seems to have been started by leaker ViewerAnon, thenext step in theGod of Warfranchisemay be a half-sequel in a similar vein to games likeUncharted: Lost LegacyandSpider-Man: Miles Morales.

Though it should definitely be taken with a pinch of salt, this would be a logical next step forGod of War, allowing Santa Monica to work on its next big project while also keeping fans happy in the meantime with a smaller-scale half-sequel. While there are quite a few different possible avenues aGod of War Ragnarokhalf-sequelcould explore, the most obvious and most likely contender would be a game focused on Atreus and his hunt for the remaining Giants.

As is the case with PlayStation’s past half-sequels, aGod of WarAtreus-ledhalf-sequel would probably introduce a handful of new enemies, along with bringing back some used in its predecessor. This would likely mean the return of some dark elves, some draugr, and potentially some mini-bosses like trolls and Dreki. But aGod of War Ragnarokhalf-sequel would need some big bad for Atreus to defeat at the end, and there’s already one perfect fit for the job.

Toward the end ofGod of War Ragnarok, Brok is killed by Odinwho had disguised himself as the Giant Tyr. Believing that Atreus practically led Odin straight to them, Brok’s brother Sindri grows a deep resentment for the boy. And while Sindri helps in the fight to stop Ragnarok, it’s clear that he doesn’t forgive Atreus or Kratos at all, throwing the latter’s hand away at Brok’s funeral and silently teleporting away by himself. It seems pretty likely that Santa Monica is setting up a potential Sindri villain twist here, and if anyone would be hunting Atreus down during hisGod of Waradventure it would be him, which could potentially lead to a pretty surprising yet emotionally powerful final boss battle. Sindri’s size makes him the perfect candidate for a teenage Atreus, too, and his teleportation could make him more intimidating than many may initially expect.
