One of the most surprising announcements from February’s Nintendo Direct earlier this year wasFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, another collaboration between Nintendo and Koei Tecmo. This entry is to be based on 2019’sFire Emblem: Three Houses, and serves as both an alternate take on it and as a sequel to 2017’sFire Emblem Warriors, which was a surprisingly successful blend of theFire Emblemseries with Koei Tecmo’sMusou/Dynasty Warriorsfranchise. Now, withFire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopesgearing up for release in June, Nintendo has showcased a new trailer highlighting many new and returning elements fromFire Emblem: Three Houses.
Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopesis the latest mashup of a Nintendo franchise with Koei Tecmo’sMusougameplay that has crossed over with major media franchises such asThe Legend of Zelda,Berserk,One Piece,Personaand evenAttack on Titan. The last collaboration from both publishers was 2020’sHyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which combined elements fromThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wildwith theDynasty Warriorsgameplay formula while serving as an alternate universe prequel to the 2017 open-world adventure game.

Now, both companies have combined forces for a similar take on Intelligent Systems’Fire Emblem: Three Houses. However, this time things seem very different from the original. The new trailer reveals that this story will follow a timeline in which player character Byleth remains a mercenary and seemingly acts as an antagonist towards new protagonist “Shez” (whose name and gender can also be changed). The player is once again able to choose one of the game’s three houses to side with throughout the game’s narrative, and the trailer also reveals that Support Conversations will return,allowing players to forge relationships with party membersto raise their performance during combat.
There are few developers more capable of adaptingFire Emblem: Three Housesto a new gameplay style than Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, as both developers assisted Intelligent Systems with creating the original game. As such,Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopeslooks to be an exciting new take on a gamefans have already more than familiarized themselves with in the nearly three years since its release.
It will also be exciting to see how the game handlesmaking original protagonist Byleth into a villain this time, with the game dubbing them the “Ashen Demon.” Perhaps the player’s choices on Shez will influence whether they are able to recruit Byleth to their side at some point during the game.
