The exotic world ofFar Cryis about to get even more immersive. Ubisoft unveiled a new VR installment for the popular franchise, dubbedFar Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity, during its September 10Ubisoft Forward livestreampre-show.
Ubisoft is developing the project with Zero Latency VR, a technology company that offers on-site, free-roaming virtual reality experiences. What makesDive Into Insanitystand out is that it will allow players to freely roam around the game space, unlike other VR shooters that put players on rails while they aim and shoot at oncoming enemies, or move by teleporting and joysticks. InDive Into Insanity, players are able to freely explore thechaotic world ofFar Cry, jungles and all.Dive Into Insanityalso emphasizes multiplayer gameplay, as up to eight people can play together at a time.

Fans will have to venture to one of Zero Latency VR’s locations to play the game. Luckily for them, the tech company owns venues in 22 countries, including 13 locations in North America, though Ubisoft did not specify which locations will offer the game. The experience itself looks similar to laser tag, as players shuffle into a large open room, put on headsets and backpacks, pick up a fake assault rifle and physically roam around the room while virtually traversing the game world.
In the announcement trailer, Zero Latency VR CEO Tim Ruse said players will get to “explore the world, interact with the world, be under attack in the world, (and) to fight back.”
The game will take players back tooFar Cry 3’s Rook Islands and featuresVaas Montenegro, perhaps the most iconic antagonist in the series, as the main villain. Players are shown firing assault rifles at enemies as explosions go off and bullets whizz by in what looks like a co-op mode. Zero Latency VR’s website listsDive Into Insanityas a cooperative experience, with each session lasting about 30 minutes.
Zero Latency has developed VR experiences since 2014. The company already has a number of games available at its venues, including experiences titledUndead Arena,Sol Raiders, andSingularity.
With Zero Latency VR’sFar Cry VR: Dive Into Insanityon the horizon andFar Cry 6releasing in February, it looks like a good time to be aFar Cryfan. Players who want to book a session at one of Zero Latency’s locations will have to wait until the experience launches next year, so long as the ongoing coronavirus pandemic does not continue far into 2021.
