AnElden Ringplayer has made an interesting discovery about all the runes they have been collecting. Sincerunes areElden Ring’s currencythat are collected in vast quantities by the endgame, many might not put much thought into their relation to the larger world, but they do share a connection with one of the most pivotal parts of the Lands Between, and this may have been expressed in a small way.
With the adherence to detail that developer FromSoftware puts into each of its games, it might not be much of a surprise that this philosophy has been applied to its biggest title. Since its launch,Elden Ringplayers have made interesting discoveriesabout how players can interact with the world and little tidbits that the developers went out of the way to implement for the sake of making this decaying world feel more alive.

A small, but interesting detail about the runes players collect from defeating enemies was recently discovered by a Reddit user who goes by freetrolley42, who drew a fascinating parallel between the currency and the Erdtree that sits at the center ofElden Ring’s map and story. When looking at the icon for runes and comparing it to the inside of a tree branch, they notice that both have a reasonably similar shape and freetrolley43 proposed that slices of the Erdtree’s branches are what the runes are made out of.
This discovery has been disputed by several users commenting on the post. One of the top comments links screenshots to the game’s wiki that imply that runes are found in the eyes or are at the very least something that resides from within the individual carrying them. One other commenter states that runes do come from grace, which is granted by theErdtree whose role inElden Ringis dubiousas it is wrought with many mysteries even after the game finishes. This means a strong link exists between the two, even if physical similarities are debatable.
It is still a mystery if the connection between runes and the Erdtree will be further elaborated on inElden Ring’sShadow of the ErdtreeDLC, but the former’s role does seem to be among the most straightforward things brought up in the game. Still, many fans find something fun in parsing over the most minute details in a game as crammed full of them asElden Ringis, and the anticipation for new content will only fuel the desire to make more discoveries.
Elden Ringis out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
