Both Sony and Microsoft are building up to the big launch of the companies' respective next-gen consoles,the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Gamers have begun to gear up as well, and naturally one of the biggest points of curiosity about next-gen consoles among the eager masses is how much power they’rereallypacking.
DuringEA Games’Fiscal 2020 Q3 investor call, the leadership team was called upon to explain the company’s plans for next-gen machines; while EA refused to name any specific titles (or make any big impromptu announcements), it did have a lot to say about the consoles themselves.

EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen was quite vocal about the possibilities that could open up once next-gen consoles finally make their way into the world, saying, “The power of the new consoles is gonna be substantially greater than existing consoles.” Not only that, but Jorgensen thinks that the things both next-gen consoles can do will genuinely surprise gamers. “We can do a lot more [with PS5 and Xbox Series X]," he added. “Things we’re doing will blow people’s minds.” So clearly theXbox Series X and PS5 are going to be strongerthan their predecessors, but that already seemed like a given. The significance of Jorgensen’s statement comes from his implication that the technology leap between current and next-gen consoles is going to be even bigger than expected.
The CFO had a few other predictions to make as well, stating there would be much “innovation” fromEA in future games–and beyond that, innovation across the entire game development industry. Jorgensen declared that with next-gen technology, developers would be able to make more sophisticated games and even create new genres in gaming. Beyond that, there isn’t anything revealed about either console’s exact specs so far, although different rumors have been taking guesses at what technology is used in the machines.
Hopefully, Jorgensen is right, and the next-gen consoles are powerful enough to inspire further change across the industry. Meanwhile, it’s rumored that Sony will be hosting ahuge PS5 reveal eventnext month, so perhaps gamers won’t have to wait too long to get their answers. For now, however, it remains a matter of speculation.
