Diablo 4has a wide variety of mount skins and accessories to award players as they adventure throughout Sanctuary, but the Butcher trophy admittedly leaves a lot to be desired. The Butcher has been one of the mosticonicDiablobosses in the franchise, having appeared in all its titles (except forDiablo 2). While the Butcher may not have any complex motivations or character, his memorable catchphrase and jump scare in the originalDiablogame have etched him into the fandom’s subconscious enough for Blizzard to give him repeat appearances.

Whereas he was a full-fledged Act boss inDiablo 3, his role in the sequel is diminished by comparison, though many would argue for the better. TheButcher inDiablo 4is a rare unique spawn, and players can find him roaming about in any of the dungeons inDiablo 4. Much like his original appearance, he is a tough enemy to take down and has ended the playthrough of severalDiablo 4hardcore characters. It’s a bit tricky to farm the Butcher, as his rarity makes him spawn about once or twice during the journey to endgame.

Diablo 4players who manage to take him down have a chance to earn the Butcher’s Cleaver trophy for their mounts, and as iconic as his weapon is, there’s a slight problem with it: it’s too small. The meat cleaver that he brandishes is much closer to its original design fromDiablo’s artwork, and makes the mount accessory seem more like it belongs to a regular butcher from across the street. While not a priority fix by any measure, it is a hilariously underwhelming trophy compared to its original owner.

For the most part, the cosmetics inDiablo 4have been a hit with players, as they’ve managed tocustomize theirDiablo 4charactersin unprecedented ways for the franchise. Though the game is leaning into its premium currency shop a bit too enthusiastically for some players, many have managed to make do with the baseDiablo 4outfits and mount equipment. Though the Butcher may drop a rather middling mount trophy, the Butcher’s Cleaver is also a unique axe that players can wield, and it’s certainly a decent cosmetic choice for Barbarian players.

Ultimately, asDiablo 4develops across its two expansions, players may yet see more familiar enemies along the way. A return to Kurast could mean a second encounter with Stormtree, and a trip to Lut Gholein is a decent opportunity to add Fangskin or even Radament to the game. That being said, with World Bosses such as Ashava,Diablo 4is certainly capable of creating memorable monsters on its own. As fun as encountering the Butcher can be, many feel that he should stay the exception, and not the rule.

Diablo 4is available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, and PS5.
