Trek to Yomiis an upcoming third-person cinematic action-adventure game from Leonard Menchiari and Flying Wild Hog focusing on a young Japanese swordsman named Hiroki. Published by Devolver Digital,Trek to Yomiis scheduled to launch on May 5, which should explain the latest marketing effort for the game.Trek to Yomidoesn’t have anything to do with Sega’s upcomingSonic the Hedgehogclassic game bundleSonic Origins. However, that isn’t going to stop Devolver from capitalizing on an opportunity thatSonic Originspresented.
As part of Sega’s announcement ofSonic Origins, it revealed a chart displaying the game’s various editions, pre-order content, and DLC. The confirmation that Sega was taking these classicSonic the Hedgehoggamesand monetizing them in such a way was met with frustration from fans. Devolver, with its well-known sense of humor, responded with a humorous post on Twitter mocking Sega’sSonic Originschart and promoting the upcoming release ofTrek to Yomi.

The chart that Devolver Digital put together to make fun ofSega andSonic Originsis relatively simple. Along the top of the chart are the different “editions” ofTrek to Yomi, which is really just a list of the game’s supported platforms across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Along the side is a list of features and marketable elements, including theTrek to Yomigame itself, a 10% discount for pre-ordering, stunning visuals, a remarkable soundtrack, and cheekily, “full credits at the end.” All of these bullet points are checked off for all platforms.
What Devolver is saying is that all players who purchaseTrek to Yomiwill get the same experience. There’s only one version of the game to purchase and nothing will be missed due to DLC segregating players based on the cash they invest in it.
It should be made clear that Devolver Digital doesn’t directly mentionSonic Origins, though it’s clear what the post is referencing. There’s no direct insult being made. Devolver isn’t so much “calling out"Sonic Originsas it is capitalizing on the discourse going viral and the ridiculousness of the situation in the first place.
Odds are thatTrek to Yomiwill garner as much attention as it needs with or withoutDevolver Digital’s unique marketing efforts. Not only doesTrek to Yomilook very appealing in its early trailers, but it will also be widely available via Xbox Game Pass. A touch of Devolver’s marketing magic surely won’t hurt, of course.
Trek to Yomireleases May 5 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
