The advent of Solar 3.0 added a completely new way to play Solar subclasses inDestiny 2. Scorch and Ignite are the two main offensive verbs linked with the Solar element, and they both have the capacity to deal tons of damage if used properly.

These Solar verbs can be a little hard to grasp at first, evenfor veteranDestiny 2players. Solar Ignitions in particular can be difficult to trigger, especially if players don’t know what they’re doing. Here’s a quick overview on how this mechanic works as well as some tips on how to use it more consistently.

What Are Solar Ignitions?

Simply put, a Solar Ignition is a fiery explosion that occurs when certain conditions are met. Usually, this condition is when a target reaches 100 Scorch stacks caused by Aspects, Fragments, abilities, or equipment. Other times, Ignitions are caused by specific Fragments or Exotic gear. Perks like Firefly and Dragonfly are not counted as Ignitions even if they do Solar damage. Some of the most notable ways of causing Solar Ignitions are:

Triggering Ignitions via Scorch stacking is nearly impossible against red-bar enemies considering their generally-low health pools, so expect this effect to trigger mainly on elites, champions, and bosses. Players who are trying to complete Bounties or quest steps involving Ignitions should rely on their Solar grenades and abilities.

Multiple Ignitions can be chained together as long as the team is capable of consistently stacking Scorch, making Ignitions a great source of bonus DPS. Additionally, there area number of Fragmentsthat can further improve the effectiveness of Solar Ignitions. Ember of Eruption, for example, increases the area of effect of Ignitions, while Ember of Char causes Ignitions to spread Scorch, potentially setting off a chain reaction.

Crucible Bounties that involve defeating players with Solar Ignitions can be incredibly difficult given the nature of PvP. To make these bounties easier, players will need to either adjust their playstyle or use Exotic gear to improve their odds of getting Ignition kills. Here are a few viable strategies for scoring Ignitions in the Crucible:

Occassionally, Bungie may add strong Seasonal Artifact mods that canmake triggering ignitions a cakewalk. For example, in Season of the Wish, players can unlock the Rays of Precision mod, which ignites targets defeated with Precision Hits when the Radiant buff is active. This is especially powerful in difficult PvE content where enemies have high health and thus, have a better chance of being ignited.
