Summary
Destiny 2fans are worried that Bungie’s aggressive microtransaction strategy will continue into the game’s future with the addition of newThe Witchercosmetics. These concerns come to the forefront as the game’s Season of the Wish update approaches, releasing on November 28 in conjunction withThe Witchercrossover.
In previous instances, likeDestiny 2’sAssassin’s Creedcrossover, players had to spend 2,000 silver ($20) for one of the three armor sets that were released. Although this event took place almost a year ago, this pricey trend continued with recent events, where players were often charged $15-$20 for a single cosmetic item.

Destiny 2’s community has taken to social media to voice its concerns, with one tweet going particularly viral. Amassing over 500k views, Twitter user JpDeathBlade commented that the complete edition ofThe Witcher 3, which includes the base game plus all DLC, can currently be bought for only $12.49 on Steam. This is compared to the likely cost of a singleWitchercosmetic come November 28, which will be priced in the $15-$20 range if Bungie follows the trend of its previous crossovers.
While it’s not the fairest comparison, seeing thatThe Witcher 3was released over seven years ago and Steam is in the midst of a Black Friday sale, it does highlight the high pricing ofDestiny 2’scosmetic items. However, Bungie has maintained these prices for years, so the model clearly works for the game developer, suggesting that enough users are forking over cash for new cosmetics. Similarly,Destiny 2’s Fortnitecrossovercharged $15 for each of its three bundles, with each bundle containing one armor piece. But, it’s important to note that Bungie has not yet revealed its prices for the coming crossover, so it’s still possible that fans could see a revision to this strategy.
In addition to high cosmetic prices, fans have expressed that thisWitchercrossover was a missed opportunity forDestiny 2. Previous updates toDestiny 2featured much moreWitcher-like features and could have been perfect timing for a crossover. But this one feels somewhat forced and out of place, as Bungie’s flagship franchise begins to lose popularity.
Just recently,Destiny 2’splayer count hit an all-time lowon Steam. In addition to significant layoffs at Bungie earlier this year, the company may be more motivated than ever to help its game rebound. Despite its decreasing player count,Destiny 2has maintained a dedicated playerbase that remains engrossed in the game’s universe and gameplay. Having been released over six years ago, Bungie is no stranger to navigating ups and downs when it comes toDestiny 2. Its fans are hoping that this is just one of many temporary downturns for the game.
