Members of theDestiny 2community have started conversations regarding the lackluster performance of several Primary weapon archetypes and their hope for the developers to bring said weapons up to speed. One of the most vital points ofDestiny 2’s gunplay is the viability of every weapon archetype and the sheer diversity of the arsenal, which enables players to mix and match to find a suitable combination of armaments for every possible encounter. Unfortunately, the same strength is leading to the stagnation of the weapon meta, relegating players to only use one or two viable weapon archetypes.

Although recent seasons and expansions have shifted the DPS meta towards chaining abilities and using Super skills,Destiny 2’s multifaceted gameplay is held together by its crisp and innovative gunplay.Destiny 2’s impressive arsenaloffers players the selection of projectile-based and bladed weapons that use three distinct types of ammunition to fuel the lethal capabilities. The general concept surrounding ammunition types is that Primary ammo weapons deal relatively low base damage, while Special and Heavy ammo weapons can dish out much higher damage values. In terms of gameplay, this usually results in players equipping a weapon of each ammo type to prepare for every encounter and enemy variant.

Due to the aforementioned low damage values, Primaries have always been relegated to take out rank-and-file combatants and potentially some minor targets due to the smaller health pools of these enemies. Even though Bungie regularly updates the Heavy and Special weapons, the bottom rung of the combat hasn’t seen much shift, and thus Primary weapons have remained untouched by patch notes. WithDestiny 2receiving an endgame difficulty increase, players have noted how they feel forced to use SMGs for trash mobs. Several players have taken to Reddit and provided feedback on the lackluster damage output of Pulse and Auto Rifles, noting how enemies feel like bullet sponges in combat.

The issue has been further amplified by the latest Root of Nightmares raid that saw thefastest World First race inDestiny 2history. Data from raid reports and stat-tracking websites show that SMGs like Funnelweb and CALUS Mini-Tool dominate the primary weapon usage section, with only the Quicksilver Storm Exotic Auto Rifle coming close. In light of this conversation, players have asked Bungie to look at the stagnant meta of Primaries and buff the underpowered weapons instead of nerfing SMGs.

It is unlikely that Bungie will release a mid-season patch to buff such a large portion of the arsenal since an overhaul of this level will require careful tuning and testing. Players can most likely expect the balance patch to arrive withnew Legendary weapons inDestiny 2’s next season.

Destiny 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
