Suicide Squaddirector David Ayer recently shared a photograph of Jared Leto’s Joker, hinting at the “Ayer Cut” of the divisive DC film. Recently,Suicide Squadrecently received a soft reboot from James Gunn, which fans took much more kindly to.
Jared Leto portrayed Jokerin the widely pannedSuicide Squadfilm after months of preparation, physical alterations, and stories of controversial method acting. However, his performance wasn’t received in the way Leto had intended. Since the film was released, Ayer has come out and claimedSuicide Squadwould have turned out differently had the studio not interfered with his vision, a common theme with Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe films.

Following the calls for aZack Snyder cut of theJustice League, fans have been petitioning for Ayer to receive the same support for his version ofSuicide Squad. In a recent post on his Twitter account, Ayer shared a previously unseen photo of Leto’s Joker, where the character can be seen shirtless and wielding a baseball bat. The post includes a caption reading, “Jared killed it But no one knows,” implying that Leto’s performance would have been more appreciated had fans been able to see Ayer’s Cut ofSuicide Squad.
DC isn’t the only company to experience creative arguments over its film franchises. Recently, Marvel Studios was revealed to have gone through its own fair share of troubles with its own committee. The group in question was almost responsible for ‘ruining’ many of Marvel Studios' most prominent films,includingCaptain America: Civil War.
Ayer didn’t necessarily get the same level ofsupport for his cut ofSuicide Squadthat Snyder did withJustice League. Many fans want to move on from what was, while others want to give the director a fair shot at sharing what he had intended. If the director is going to get hated, then it should at least be for the film he intended to release instead of what the studio altered to fit its own guidelines.
Ayer’s tweet has once again fueled support and interest in his director’s cut ofSuicide Squad, though Warner Bros. has still expressed little to no interest in revisiting the film. Hopefully, this leads to more interest in what the director’s initial vision was for the film so fans and critics alike can get what was truly deserved.
