After an explosive start,Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2has slowed down to a crawl over the last few months. Despite receiving several major updates with each new Season,Modern Warfare 2is still a little lacking in the content department, with barely any new or original maps, and practically no new modes. ThoughCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is still one of the most complete games in series history, it’s not doing quite enough to encourage fans to stick around, but that could all be about to change with its Season 3 update.
Coming toCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2sometime around April 11,the Season 3 updateis set to bring a slew of new content to the game, and unlike previous Seasons, it’s all stuff fans have been asking for. Along with a wholly original map, players will also finally get to experience the beloved Gunfight mode once more. But while only a 2v2 Gunfight variant has been confirmed so far, Infinity Ward can do a lot more with game mode.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Gunfight Can Add More Than Just a 2v2 Mode
First introduced in2019’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, Gunfightis widely considered to be one of the best modern additions to the franchise. The standard Gunfight mode pits two teams of two against one another in a very small arena. Every player is given the same loadout, and it’s just a pure test of skills and teamwork to determine which team comes out on top. In its first few months,Modern Warfarewould be updated so that its Gunfight mode was given some alternate variations, including a 1v1 mode, and a 3v3 mode, all using the same rules and parameters as the original 2v2 mode.
Gunfight quickly became one of the most popular modes inModern Warfare, and due to popular demand, Treyarch included it in its subsequent entryCall of Duty Black Ops: Cold War, where it once again received several new variations. Gunfight: OSP (on-site procurement) was essentially just a standard Gunfight match, though players needed to pick weapons up off the ground. Gunfight Snipers Only and Gunfight Melee Only restricted players to just snipers and melee weapons respectively. And Gunfight Custom let players choose any of their custom loadouts upon spawning.
Over the years, developers also added in a few seasonal Gunfight variations to tie in with holiday events. Gunfright was one of the first instances of this, tying in withthe Haunting of Verdansk event. This variant followed the same rules as a standard Gunfight match, but upon death, the player would leave behind a skull. If a player picked up this skull then their health would be refilled. Snowfight was another seasonal variation, seeing players use snowballs to defeat one another as opposed to regular weapons.
WhenCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2receives its own Gunfight mode in Season 3, it should also bring its own set of variant modes to the table. While Gunfight Snipers and Melee Only variants are a great place to start,Modern Warfare 2has the perfect opportunity to get a little whackier with its Gunfight variations. For example, a form of theOne in the Chamber and Sticks and Stones game modescould be condensed down into Gunfight, giving players just one bullet to eliminate their opponents, or just a melee weapon and grenades.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
