Leaked calling cards fromCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2suggest that an Extinction type of mode might be in the works for Activision’s most recentCall of Dutytitle. The calling cards seem to be visible unintentionally and portray aliens, which might suggest an unannounced game mode.Modern Warfare 2launched a few days ago with classic solo and multiplayer gameplay as well as some new additions.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2is Activision’s latest title in the popular first-person shooter franchise. It launched just under two weeks ago with single-player Early Access and a week later in its entirety. In addition to core single-player and multiplayer modes,Call of Dutytitles have often offered popular narrative-defying modes, including Zombies andGhosts-exclusive mode Extinction. Currently,Modern Warfare 2doesn’t offer either of these modes, or any derivatives.

However, it seems that Activision might bebringing Extinction to a non-Call of Duty: Ghoststitle. According to a Reddit leak, future calling cards feature multiple with alien themes. Due to a bug in the game, Reddit users have found a way to view all the currently available and even upcoming calling cards and emblems. It has revealed several that depict soldiers fighting aliens and hives with hanging eggs. Depending on the interpretation, at least eight seem to have an alien theme.
Extinction is a co-op mode that was only featured inCall of Duty: Ghosts, released in 2013. Instead of fighting against Zombies, which has been available in a multitude of the franchise’s titles sinceCall of Duty: World at War, in Extinction players face a swarm of alien creatures. Killing these aliens, called Cryptids, and destroying the hives will reward players with money that can be used to buy upgrades and cosmetics. WhileGhostswasn’t among the most popularCall of Dutytitles, Extinction is considered by some one of the better aspects of the game.
While this sure does look like Activision is bringing back a niche game mode, it’s far from conclusive. Calling cards feature a lot of somewhat random imagery that doesn’t necessarily have to do with the game or its game modes. It might be thatActivision is continuing with a much more mainstream Zombies mode, instead. From the comments, though, it seems that Extinction would be a very welcome addition toModern Warfare 2.
