Rumer Willis revealed the diagnosis on her personal Instagram. “Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD). Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,” Willis said. She also added some of the details of her father’s condition. “FTD is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone. For people under 60, FTD is the most common form of dementia, and because getting the diagnosis can take years, FTD is likely much more prevalent than we know. Today there are no treatments for the disease, a reality that we hope can change in the years ahead. As Bruce’s condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research.”
Willis' original aphasia diagnosis forced him into early retirement, though it was for the best considering the issues that come with a condition like that. Knowing that it’s a form of dementia further demonstrates how serious Willis' health issues are and why he needs the best treatment. An action movie titledAssassinis his last movie, and it is slated to be released on March 31 this year, which should be his final movie, knowing what he’s currently going through.
It is outright awful that Willis is suffering from a condition like this. However, there is a silver lining to this news. With Willis' new diagnosis, there will be a bigger push to develop research to treat and cure this disease, much like the reaction to Michael J. Fox’s Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis in 2000. Even if his career is over, Willis' diagnosis could potentially help many people who suffer or will suffer from the same disease. It may only be the start, but at least greater efforts will be focused on treating this condition.
In the meantime, fans should all appreciate the career Willis had. He got his first break on the hit TV showMoonlighting, then redefined the action star withDie Hard. After that, Willis played roles in some of the most well-received dramas in the 1990s, likePulp FictionandM. Night Shyamalan’sThe Sixth Sense. Even as he got older, he embraced that with action movies likeREDandLooper. Even if it all ended prematurely, Willis had a pretty impressive acting career for three decades.
